Sir Patrick Stewart passed away on October 28 at the age of 86. The news of his passing was confirmed through his social media accounts, with a statement reading, “We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.” Stewart began his acting career at the age of 18 and went on to work in the industry for nearly six decades. Here's a roundup of some of his most iconic roles in TV shows and movies to celebrate his long career.

The Star Trek Franchise

Even those who may not know Patrick Stewart by name will likely recognize him from the Star Trek franchise. He made his debut as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, starring across all seven seasons. Stewart reprised the role in four theatrical films: Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis. He later returned as a retired Admiral Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard, which ran for three seasons. Apart from these, he also appeared in the first two episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. If you want to watch him play the stern yet smart captain, you can catch him in all these titles, which are available on Paramount+.

The X-Men Franchise

Patrick Stewart is just as popular among Marvel fans as he is among Star Trek fans. He portrayed Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise over a span of 26 years. Professor X is the calm, telepathic leader of the mutants, and the character first appeared in the 2000s X-Men. Stewart went on to reprise the role in X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past (sharing the role with James McAvoy), Logan, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He also made cameo appearances in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine. And luckily for his fans, he will once again play Charles Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives in theaters on December 18. All these titles, except for the upcoming film, are available to stream on Disney+.

Dune

Dune is a 1984 epic space opera film based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. The synopsis reads: “On a harsh desert planet that yields a galactic empire's most valuable resource, a noble family's young heir must prove himself amid growing treachery.” Patrick Stewart played the supporting role of Gurney Halleck, a loyal warrior who helps Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) prepare for battle and rally the troops following the death of Duke Leto (Jürgen Prochnow). The film is available to stream on Tubi and to buy or rent on Prime Video.

Moby Dick

Patrick Stewart starred as Captain Ahab in Moby Dick and even earned an Emmy nomination for his performance. Moby Dick is a 1998 two-part miniseries adapted from Herman Melville's 1851 novel of the same name. Interestingly, Stewart landed the role shortly after quoting lines from the novel as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the 1996 film Star Trek: First Contact. Meanwhile, the official logline gives viewers an idea of what to expect from the series: “The sole survivor of a doomed whaling ship relates the harrowing tale of his captain's self-destructive obsession to hunt down the white whale, Moby Dick.” Fans can catch the miniseries on Tubi.

Green Room

In the 2015 thriller film Green Room, Patrick Stewart plays Darcy Banker, the calm, calculating, and ruthless leader of a neo-Nazi skinhead organization. The film's synopsis reads: “At the end of their low-budget tour, a punk band accepts a gig at an isolated rural club, only to discover that their hosts are a supremacist group.” The band is called The Ain't Rights, a fitting name considering that what happens to them after they accidentally witness a murder really ain't right. You can watch Green Room on Netflix or rent or buy it through Prime Video.

The Sheep Detectives

This is one of Patrick Stewart's more recent roles. In The Sheep Detectives, he does not appear on screen, but his role is just as important. Stewart voices Sir Ritchfield, one of the oldest, wisest, and most conservative sheep in the flock, in the 2026 mystery-comedy film. Here's the synopsis: “Every night, George Hardy (Hugh Jackman) reads aloud a murder mystery to his beloved sheep raised only for wool, never suspecting that they understand. When he is suddenly found dead under mysterious circumstances, sheep conclude they will have to solve the murder for themselves, even if it means leaving their meadow for the first time and facing a human world that isn't as simple as it appears in books.” The film is available to stream on Prime Video.
