‘A Different World’ Returns After 39 Years: A Look at All the Original Cast Members Coming Back for the Netflix Sequel
Jasmine Guy
Jasmine Guy is set to return as fan-favorite Whitley Gilbert in Netflix’s A Different World sequel. Originally introduced as a wealthy Southern belle, Whitley evolved from a supporting character into the heart of the series after Lisa Bonet’s departure. Away from Hillman College, Guy has remained busy in Hollywood, building a career as an actress, director, and activist. In recent years, she has appeared in the Amazon Prime comedy Harlem, made a guest appearance on the mystery series Poker Face, and featured in Grosse Pointe Garden Society.
Kadeem Hardison
Kadeem Hardison is returning to A Different World, once again stepping into the role of Dwayne Wayne. A main figure in the original series, Dwayne became a fan favorite thanks to his signature flip-up glasses, intelligence, and memorable romance with Whitley Gilbert. Viewers watched him grow from a fun-loving freshman into a respected mathematician, tutor, and educator during the show's run. Hardison has remained a familiar face on screen in recent years, continuing to build his acting résumé with appearances in projects such as Prime Video’s Criminal and HBO’s popular drama Euphoria.
Cree Summer
Cree Summer’s return means fans will once again see Winifred “Freddie” Brooks, one of A Different World’s most beloved characters. Joining the original series in its second season, Freddie stood out for her quirky charm, outspoken nature, and commitment to social causes, remaining a core part of the show through its final season. Outside of Hillman College, Summer has enjoyed a successful career, especially in voice acting, with credits spanning hundreds of animated projects. She recently lent her voice to shows like Max & the Midknights, Strip Law, Iron Man and His Awesome Friends, and continues her longstanding voice roles in The Patrick Star Show and The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.
Darryl M. Bell
Fans of A Different World will be happy to see Darryl M. Bell back in the sequel series as Ron Johnson Jr. During the original show, Ron became a standout character thanks to his humor, and close friendship with Dwayne Wayne. His smooth-talking personality often landed him in amusing situations, making him a memorable part of life at Hillman College. In recent years, Bell has focused on work behind the camera as an independent producer and digital media creator. He is also a dedicated advocate for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, regularly participating in events and tours that help raise awareness and support for HBCUs.
Charnele Brown
Charnele Brown is also returning for Netflix’s sequel, bringing back Kimberly “Kim” Reese, one of Hillman College’s students. Introduced in Season 2, Kim remained a key figure throughout the rest of the series, earning viewers’ affection. Away from the sitcom, Brown has continued building her career in independent film and television. She recently appeared in the streaming movie Trouble and played a creative role in Changes, which she both wrote and produced. Through her company, Tri-Wen Productions, she continues to champion projects that highlight Black stories and support emerging filmmakers.
Jenifer Lewis
Jenifer Lewis is set to reprise her role as Dean Dorothy Dandridge Davenport in the sequel. Introduced during the show's final season, the tough but entertaining dean kept Hillman College students on their toes and added plenty of humor to campus life. Lewis has remained a powerhouse in the entertainment industry, balancing work across television, film, and audio projects while also advocating for mental health awareness. Recently, she concluded her run on The Chi, appeared in Kenya Barris’ Audible comedy Big Age, and lent her voice to Florence “Flo” Everson in the 2026 animated sports comedy Goat.
Jada Pinkett Smith
Jada Pinkett Smith is heading back to Hillman College, reprising her role as Lena James in the sequel. Introduced in Season 5, Lena became a standout character thanks to her outspoken personality and determined attitude. Originally studying engineering before switching to journalism, she brought a fresh perspective to the series. In recent years, she has kept a lower public profile while focusing on media production, wellness initiatives, and content creation. She continues to oversee projects through the Hillman Grad network and co-runs the production company Westbrook with Will Smith. Pinkett Smith was also recently involved in a legal dispute with a former friend of Smith’s, with a California judge ultimately ruling in her favor.
