Legendary writer and 'Hellboy' creator Mike Mignola is back with a brand-new Dark Horse comic series starring the ever-popular Frankenstein's Monster. The series will be a prequel to Mignola's hit series 'Frankenstein Underground' and is set to bridge the gap between the original 'Frankenstein' story and Mignola's modern adaptation.

Mignola is joined by Scott Allie as a co-writer for the first issue of 'Frankenstein Undone'. Mignola's frequent collaborator Ben Stenbeck will be providing the art and the cover for the issue with Brennan Wagner providing colors.

Preview pages released for the upcoming series reveal the introduction of a new character, an as-yet-unnamed old man who helps the monster in his time of need. The synopsis teases that the monster will be meeting a number of "unlikely companions" so the old man may be one of them though there's also a "disaster" tease so, in all probability, none of these new-found friends are going to be sticking around for long.

Though the series is connected to both Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' and Mignola's 'Frankenstein Underground', editor Katie O’Brien revealed in a January 28 interview with Horror News Network that "we’ll see where Shelley’s Frankenstein creature (called Frankenstein in our story) becomes Mike’s Frankenstein. Issue one begins in the Arctic, where Shelley’s novel ends, and we’ll even have some flashbacks to moments in the novel. You don’t need to have read Frankenstein Underground to pick this story up."

“We wanted to tell our version of the monster's history and, at the same time, reveal more of the history of our odd little Hellboy world,” Mignola said in an interview with Inverse. “And we are thrilled to have the great Ben Stenbeck back, once again breathing sad life into our tragic hero.”

Here's the official solicitation for the issue: "Frankenstein's creator lies dead in the icy grip of the Arctic, and the monster searches for a new purpose. Just as he thinks he's found one with a group of unlikely companions, disaster strikes--and the monster is catapulted out of Mary Shelley's novel and into the world of Hellboy."

"Bridging Mary Shelley's original Frankenstein novella and Mike Mignola's Frankenstein Underground, this series brings together Mignola, Scott Allie, Ben Stenbeck, Brennan Wagner, and Clem Robins for an all-new horror adventure in the far north."

'Frankenstein Undone' #1 is scheduled to be released on January 29.
