Cheslie Kryst, a former Miss USA, allegedly jumped from a high-rise apartment building in New York City on Sunday (January 30) morning. Kryst was a beauty queen, lawyer, fashion blogger, and Extra TV journalist. The winner of the 2019 pageant, who lived on the ninth level of Manhattan's 60-story Orion Building, was discovered dead on the street below. Kryst wrote on her Instagram profile just before she jumped, “May this day bring you rest and peace.”

Some of the witnesses who saw the former Miss USA jumping from her apartment and falling on the street explained the experience as “traumatizing”. One witness told to The Sun US, "I just saw the body and the blood ... I didn't realize it was [Kyrst] unit I saw the news when I got home. I was here for 9/11 so I've seen some pretty traumatizing things ... and this was awful." He added, “I was like, 'Oh s**t' and it's really unfortunate because another guy on 43rd [Street] between Eighth and Ninth [Avenue] just jumped like two weeks ago. Even if people seem strong or fine they might not be ... it might be a front. This is a really easy city to get lost in ... Check in with your people.”

A nearby local store owner also explained to The Sun that he was working at the shop when a client raced inside to inform him that someone had jumped from a nearby building. He rushed outdoors to see the lifeless body of Kryst lying on the road and surrounded by the NYPD cops. He remarked, "It was crazy and very sad. I have never seen anything like that ... I couldn't believe it."

Earlier, Kryst's family wrote in a statement, “In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie. Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength. She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined. Cheslie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA, and as a host on Extra. But most importantly as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor, and colleague — we know her impact will live on."

Many celebrities have paid a tribute to Kryst on social media since news of her death broke. Harnaaz Sandhu, Miss Universe 2021, posted a heartfelt message in which she expressed that she is heartbroken after hearing the news. Sandhu shared an image of herself and Kryst on her Instagram story. She wrote, "This is heartbreaking and unbelievable, you were always an inspiration to many. Rest In Peace Cheslie."
