Moments before the presidential debate 2020 could commence in Cleveland on September 29, Twitter users took to the platform to express their disappointment in former governor of New Jersey and political commentator Chris Christie, who was chosen as an analyst by ABC for the event. On Sunday (September 27), Trump had told during the White House press briefing that Christie was helping him prepare ahead of the presidential debate and noted that he would be acting as his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, according to New York Post.

Who is Chris Christie?

Christie is an American politician, commentator, lobbyist, and former federal prosecutor, who served as the Governor of New Jersey from 2010 to 2018. He was actively involved in campaigning for former President George HW Bush and George W Bush. He was appointed as the US Attorney for New Jersey from 2002 to 2008 by George W Bush. He won the Republican primary in 2009 and became the Governor of New Jersey by defeating Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine. While he has credited for his contribution toward tax management in his first term, he lost his standing in the second term was damaged by the Fort Lee lane closure scandal, in which his staff members and political appointees allegedly colluded to create traffic jams in Fort Lee, New Jersey, closing the lanes for the upper level of Geroge Washington Bridge.

Christie announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination during the 2016 presidential election, but suspended it eventually and endorsed Trump. He left office in 2018 after concluding his second term as the Governor of New Jersey and registered as a lobbyist in June 2020. He first joined ABC News as a political contributor in 2018, in less than a week after he concluded his term as the governor. He first appeared on ‘Good Morning America’.

It seems like the majority of them aren’t convinced with the fact that Christie is serving an analyst on ABC, knowing his leaning towards Trump’s presidency. The political commentator started to trend on Twitter as more and more people slammed him for supporting Trump in the presidential debate 2020. One of them tweeted, "Why the f is Chris Christie a commentator for the debate on ABC news. Step up ABC #debate #Debates2020 #abc". Another added, "@abc
...can you say conflict of interest! Chris Christie for gods sake. I switched @msnbc. Never abc again... sorry George Stefanopolous I will miss you!"

Meanwhile, after watching the first few minutes of the debate, many mocked Christie for helping Trump with a content that lacked depth and couldn't come across as impactful. One asked, "Are we surprised that Chris Christie “prepped” Trump for this debate? The interruptions and incoherent rambling... Yep, I can see it." Another added, "Now, Trump is attacking Biden’s son, THIS bs is the lynchpin of this clown’s debate strategy, conducted by classy fellas Chris Christie and #ByeRudy"
