GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS: A maintenance worker was shot and killed after a resident mistook him for a burglar while he was checking pipes at an apartment complex. The 53-year-old, Cesar Montelongo, was checking the pipes at the Clayton Point Apartments on Alouette Drive in Grand Prairie on Christmas Eve.

He was standing on a balcony at around 6 pm when the resident of that apartment noticed him, according to Grand Prairie Police. The resident reportedly believed his apartment was being burglarized and so he grabbed a gun and shot Cesar to death through the window. Law enforcement arrived at the scene and found the maintenance worker lying on the balcony with a gunshot wound.

Cesar was immediately rushed to the hospital, where attending doctors pronounced him dead. Police said the victim was checking frozen and broken waterlines after several pipes on the property had ruptured earlier. The resident who shot him remained at the apartment and is said to be cooperating with the authorities, albeit no arrests have been made at the time of the publication in connection with the incident. However, the investigation is ongoing.

The case is currently being investigated and Grand Prairie Police will refer the case to the Tarrant County grand jury to review. "We don't know who the suspect is," the victim's son Cesar Montelongo Jr told WFAA. "We don't know what state they were in. We just know that that happened," he added. Montelongo Jr added, "My dad was a huge man of faith. My mother is a huge woman of faith. And so we're just believing and trying to get through it."

Cesar is survived by his wife and five sons. A GoFundMe page set up by his niece revealed that Christmas marked his 29th wedding anniversary. "My uncle was murdered Christmas Eve in an act of senseless violence while at his place of employment," Kimberly Montelongo wrote on the fundraising page. "Today, on what was supposed to be his 29th marriage anniversary, he is being grieved by his 5 sons and loving wife. My uncle was a loving and hardworking man who gave his entire life for his family. His devotion to the Lord gave him strength," she added.

MEAWW previously reported how a South Carolina man who accidentally shot and killed his daughter after mistaking her for an intruder at their home was charged in connection with the incident. According to WYFF4, 43-year-old Jermaine Pressley faced charges of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and three counts of felon possession of a firearm over the shooting death of his 23-year-old daughter Nadeja Jermaine Pressley on May 19, 2019. A news release from the Greenville County Coroner's Office said Nadeja was shot through the door as she was about to enter her Greenville home at around 1.15 am that morning. Sheriff's Office Lt Jimmy Bolt confirmed in a statement that Jermaine heard someone trying to enter his home, so he shot her through the door. She was pronounced dead at the scene, with the coroner's office ruling that it was the gunshot which fatally wounded the 23-year-old.
