One of the greatest minds in fashion, Virgil Abloh passed away on Sunday, November 28 after a private battle with cancer. He was 41. The unfortunate news of his demise was shared on his official Instagram account in a lengthy post. The artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear collection and Off-White founder is survived by his wife Shannon Abloh, children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, sister Edwina Abloh, and parents Nee and Eunice Abloh. The fashion genius was diagnosed with cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare form of cancer in 2019.
The Instagram post shared with his close to seven million followers on Instagram stated, “We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend.” It also read, “For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.” Speaking of celebrity deaths, we recently lost Lisa Banes in a hit-and-run accident. Virgil Abloh’s wife is Shannon Abloh who was earlier known as Shannon Sundberg. She is an American program manager at Monster. She earlier used to work at Yahoo! as a media planner and account manager, as reported by The Sun. The 40-year-old wife of Virgil earned a Bachelor’s degree in management and marketing from Edgewood College in Wisconsin. The duo first met in high school and dated for 10 years before he finally popped the big question. The couple then walked down the aisle in 2009 in Chicago.
Speaking of Virgil, the late fashion designer and entrepreneur was a trained architect. He stepped into the world of international fashion with an internship at Fendi in 2009, alongside American rapper Kanye West. Virgil was also named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2018. The official Twitter account of LVMH Group too shared the news of the late designer’s death saying, “LVMH, Louis Vuitton and Off White are devastated to announce the passing of Virgil Abloh, on Sunday, November 28th, of cancer, which he had been battling privately for several years.” A host of celebrities like Drake, Hailey Bieber, Kanye West, The Weeknd, Khloe Kardashian and Soulja Boy among others paid tribute to Virgil on Instagram and Twitter. Social media users along with public figures thronged to Twitter to share their condolences. Migos member Offset shared a picture of Virgil on Twitter and said, “Rip Virgil prayers to your family thank you for always supporting the youth always kind we just spoke bro smh.” Pharrell Williams, who is also a big fashion icon, shared, “My heart is broken. Virgil you were a kind, generous, thoughtful creative genius. your work as a human and your work as a spiritual being will live forever. Sending love and light to your wife, children, family and day ones you’re with the Master now, shine. “
Rapper Big Sean too took to Twitter and added, “Creative Genious, An Architect of culture, thank you for everything. It’s hard to see you go bro. I’m proud of you VIRGIL and thanks for all the inspiration, legendary work, great memories, and your iconic style you blessed us all with.” The official page of BTS stated, “RIP Virgil Abloh, you will be missed. It was an honor to work with you. A true creative genius.” British star Idris Elba asserted, “Too soon Virgil. You will be missed from this world man.” Singer and songwriter Kehlani tweeted, “rest in absolute peace. shocking. thank you Virgil” followed by an emoticon of a white dove.
