A 32-year-old woman was slammed online for asking a “disabled person to move seats on the bus” so that she could sit with her five-year-old child. The mother, after being called out as “insensitive” and “ableist” by one of her friends, took to social media to narrate what had happened and which party was really at fault.

The post, which riled up netizens, was posted by the said woman on the Reddit group ‘Am I the A**hole?’ The group, which has been created to facilitate the “catharsis for the frustrated moral philosopher” in everyone, saw a huge amount of activity as the question logged in more than 2,500 responses, where the majority of users sided with woman's friend to pronounce her as the guilty party.

‘Whether or not I was in the wrong’, asks the mother

According to the post, the woman boarded the bus with her daughter from a crowded stop. The only seat available in the bus was “one near a person using a wheelchair." Asking the 40-year-old disabled man to “move their wheelchair to another spot so that my daughter and I could sit together," the woman complained, “But the person declined, saying that they needed the space for their mobility device.”

The post added that she was "taken aback and frustrated by this response." Expressing her dissatisfaction, she wrote that despite explaining to the man why she needed to sit beside her daughter, the man refused to move. As a result of which, she had to stand, to which she wrote, “I ended up having to stand for the entire ride with my daughter in tow, which was uncomfortable and tiring for both of us.”

However, when she shared this experience with her friend, the latter told her she was “being insensitive and ableist. "They pointed out that the person in the wheelchair had a right to the space they needed and that it was unfair of me to ask them to move,” her post read.

Presenting the entire story, she asked the Reddit community to deliver a fair judgment, to which most users supported the friend by bashing her for her entitled act.

'Both stand and just deal'

Netizens did not take her questions kindly as one user commented, "How were they supposed to move? Every bus I've taken there's a designated spot for wheelchairs and they have to flip the whole bus seat up so the person can park the chair there. Either way, YTA. You could stand and your daughter sit or she could sit on your lap or you could both stand." Another user said, "When I was a kid I got taught to give up my seat for elderly, pregnant, or disabled. As a able bodied adult I’ve added parents with young children. It’s baffling how she thought she was in the right." Another Reddit user, who claimed to be a bus driver, said, "I’m a bus driver, wheelchairs have to be restrained using hooks that lock each wheel so that the rider doesn’t slide around. In order for him to move his chair someone would’ve had to unhook his chair for him to let OPs entitled a** sit down."

One Redditor noted, "Or you both stand and just deal. People do it on trains and subways all the time. It seems OP only cares about "being tired and exhausted" when her request is creating a hardship for a disabled person, and somehow rationalizes that she might not BTA. It's mind blowing how self-absorbed and privileged some people are, especially those with kids".
