The Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series has gone to Catherine O'Hara, for her role as Moira Rose on 'Schitt's Creek', a show about a wealthy family forced to live in the small town of Schitt's Creek after losing their wealth. O'Hara accepted the award from a socially distant dinner event in Eugene O'Levy's home and thanked her hair, costume and make-up for Moira Rose's extravagant looks in her acceptance speech.

The award was presented by Jennifer Anniston in one of the first awards of the night, along with Emmy host Jimmy Kimmel. The nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy series included:

Tracee Ellis Ross for her role as Rainbow Johnson in 'Black-ish', an ABC sitcom about a middle-class Black family as they juggle several personal and sociopolitical issues. Ross has already won several awards for her role as Rainbow Johnson, and a number of nominations, including a previous Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2016.

Linda Cardellini for her role as Judy Hale on 'Dead to Me', a series about a pair of women dealing with their grief, and the dark secrets each of them hide. Judy Hale is soon revealed to be the motorist who killed the husband of Jen Harding, whose friendship she is trying to earn. This is Cardellini's first Emmy nomination, though she's previously won a TV Land Awards Icon Award in 2009 for her role on 'ER'

'Dead To Me' earned a second nomination for Christina Applegate, and her role as Jen Harding, a woman struggling to adjust to life after the death of her husband in a car accident. Christina Applegate's previous Emmy Awards include one for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2004, for her role on 'Friends' for which she was also nominated in 2003.

Issa Rae, for her semi-biographical role as Issa on 'Insecure', a show that unpacks the story of the black female experience from the perspective of two female protagonists. Issa has previously won an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2018 for the same role.

Rachel Brosnahan for her role as Miriam 'Midge' Maisel on 'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel', a show about a wealthy Jewish housewife who makes waves when she decides to enter into a career in stand-up comedy.
