'The Pitt' Season 2: The number 2901 could have more than just one meaning and this is what we decoded

Amid Dr. Robby and Dr. Baran's differences, the latest episode of 'The Pitt's' Season 2 ended with a patient in the ER shouting a cryptic number.

'The Pitt' on HBO is not known for its spectacular theatrics or high-octane action. Instead, the R. Scott Gemmill show makes a significant detour from the prevailing fare of popular television shows right now, focusing on the dogged pursuit of depicting reality as it is. In doing so, the HBO Max show takes cinema verite to the extreme. The dialogues are fast-paced, often disjointed, and replete with medical jargon, as one would expect from a prominent urban trauma hospital. The characters fulfil their duties within this predetermined structure, and each episode of the medical drama comprises an hour in real time during a fifteen-hour daily shift. However, one number caught the audience's attention.

The recently aired second episode of 'The Pitt' chronicled everything that happened at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. The beginning of the day was business as usual, marked by the arrival of the 'walking dead', or elderly patients, as they are referred to in the show. However, the most intriguing snippet so far came towards the end of the episode, when a visibly shaken college student was brought into the ER through the ambulance bay. Throughout his arrival, the individual was shouting the number '2901'. However, the episode did not explicitly address the significance of '2901', leaving the number open to speculation

The incident took place as Noah Wyle's Dr. Robby and Sepideh Moafi's Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi were settling their differences by the ambulance bay. Comprising a prominent storyline of the ongoing sophomore season, Baran is supposed to take over from Robby as the new attending doctor once the latter leaves for his planned hiatus.

Baran arrived at her shift remarkably early to get off on the right foot with the other doctors. But her new emphasis on patient evaluation systems, data utilization, and a tech-based approach irked Robby at first, primarily because he relied on his years of experience treating his patients, not some upstart tech! With plenty of connotations, 2901 seems to be a metaphor for the end of the past era and the beginning of a new one under Baran's leadership. But, there's more!

The number could also have a comparatively banal connotation. It might be that the patient was engrossed in the video game 'Call of Duty' at his college library and encountered a 2901 error that locks the player out of the lobbies used to access online multiplayer games. As a result of being banned, the student would have erupted with rage, prompting the campus security to have him tased and sent to the ER. 'The Pitt' Season 2 airs new episodes every Thursday on HBO Max.
