Emmys 2020: Annie Murphy bags Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for 'Schitt's Creek'
The Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series has gone to Annie Murphy for her role as Alexis Rose on 'Schitt's Creek'. The Pop TV Canadian sitcom featured the ultra-wealthy Rose family who lost their wealth in unfortunate circumstances and was forced to move to the small town of Schitt's Creek, to adjust to life in a small town. Annie Murphy's Alexis Rose was a shallow, socialite fashionista, who is especially devastated at the loss of her wealth, and her superstar lifestyle and who also continually alludes to a dark and complicated past as a running gag through the series.
The series ended earlier this year in its sixth season to much critical acclaim. While this is her first Emmy Award nomination, she has been nominated for several awards for her role as Alexis Rose before, including winning a Dorian Award for Best TV Performance - Supporting Actress in 2020, as well as a Gracie Award for Best Actress in a Breakthrough Role in 2019. Murphy accepted the award from a socially distant awards party in Eugene O'Levy's home. She thanked her co-actors and expressed her gratefulness for her role on the show in her speech.
The nominees for the award included:
Cecily Strong for her work in various roles on the famed sketch comedy satire series 'Saturday Night Live', a show that has been the starting place for many of Hollywood's biggest comedic actors, writers, producers, and directors. Among the roles that Strong has played are included impersonations of Melania Trump, Michelle Rodriguez, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and recurring characters in 'The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation with at a Party' and Heather, the One-Dimensional Female Character from a Male-Driven Comedy. Strong has been a part of the show since 2012 and is also known for her roles in 'Ghostbusters' and 'The Female Brain'. This is her first Emmy nomination.
D'Arcy Carden for her role as Janet on 'The Good Place'. The highly popular TV sitcom about the afterlife and the ethical complications of being a good person also ended earlier this year in its fourth season. Carden played Janet, an omniscient, seemingly omnipotent Alexa-like assistant who underwent her own evolution as the series progressed. She also played other versions of Janet throughout the series, including Bad Janet, Medium Janet, and Disco Janet, as well as an episode in which she played a Janet version of each of the main human protagonists. Her role as Janet has previously earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the Critics' Choice Television Award in 2019.
Alex Borstein for her role as Susie Myerson on 'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel'. The show, set in the late '50s, follows an affluent Jewish housewife who breaks all conventional norms when she decides to pursue a career in stand-up comedy, helped by her tough, fast-talking agent, Susie Myerson. Borstein has already won several awards for her role as Susie Myerson, including an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2018. She's won a Screen Actor's Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2019, and for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2020, and a Critic's Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, in both 2019 and 2020, in addition to several other nominations.
The Emmy Awards 2020 are airing live on ABC.
