Since the time Jo Evans (Allison Tolman) first spotted Piper (Alexa Swinton) among the debris from a plane crash, for reasons unknown, she always treated the AI as her own. We saw the police chief fight tooth and nail to protect her, even at the cost of her family. Such is Jo’s affinity with Piper.

Throughout Season 1 of ‘Emergence’, we saw Jo’s family come to terms with Piper’s existence and even accept her, despite being well-aware of the perils she could bring.

However, all hopes Jo and her family held on to was shattered in the previous episode, when it was revealed that Piper was inclined towards helping the other AIs, drowning out all the ties she shared with her foster family.

All along, Jo was determined to protect little Piper from the evil forces. But now that Piper has become one of them, who is Jo going to fight against? Had Piper expressed even remote unwillingness about her new life, the police chief could have acted accordingly.

But what we saw instead was Piper’s acceptance of her fellow-being with open arms, or at least put up an act, which is yet to be explored.

There are three more episodes until ‘Emergence’ concludes. Episode 10 ended with a cliffhanger by opening an avenue to a wide range of possibilities.

However, as Jo’s determination to bring Piper back remains unhinged, she may have to prepare herself to face plenty of challenges in her pursuit of the AI. The police chief has also learned about the presence of more AIs like Piper, which makes her fight against the evil forces harder than ever.

And, having Agent Brooks by her side alone isn’t going to help Jo fight the computer programmed entities, as their powers are beyond the understanding of humans.

All said and done, we can’t ignore the fact that Piper was always driven by Jo and her family’s love for her. Even when she refused to go with Jo, she made sure her message for Mia was conveyed.

So, Jo might lack the physical force, which is much-needed to fight the robots, but her fondness for Piper could serve as a weapon when she decides to wage a war.
