CLARECASTLE, IRELAND: In a frenzied knife attack, an 8-year-old Ukrainian girl was stabbed 75 times in her neck and body.

The girl, who was staying in Ireland after fleeing her war-torn homeland of Ukraine, was living in a house near Clarecastle in Co Clare, an emergency accommodation for refugees. She was found with serious injuries on Tuesday morning, September 27. Her mother, a 46-year-old woman was also discovered unconscious at the scene. The attacker is yet to be apprehended.

According to the medics, the girl had 75 wounds on her body. After being transferred from Limerick to Crumlin Children's Hospital, the eight-year-old remains in a critical condition, as all of her major organs were somehow missed. Her mother, who was also found at the scene, is revealed to be in a critical condition at the same hospital.

Both mother and daughter were staying at a property, which was formerly a B&B and is now an emergency housing for  Ukrainian refugees who have fled from their home country due to the war.

As soon as the residents heard the loud screaming in the house, they alerted the Gardai and emergency services.  Some of the residents tried to enter the room but they were unable to access it, so they had to raise the alarm to alert the concerned individuals.

In consultation with the local Civil Defence through an interpreter, the remaining occupants of the house were transferred to refugee accommodation in Ennis following the hospitalization of the daughter and mother.

In order to create a timeline of events, detectives will speak with each occupant present at the house. In addition to that, a door-to-door investigation has also been conducted by officers.

Since the family only arrived in recent months after fleeing war-torn Ukraine, the girl and her mother were not known locally.
According to the reports, the child was only enrolled in primary school after the summer break when the new academic year began.

Additionally, a family liaison officer has been assigned to the pair's family members.

A Garda spokesman said, “This is a live and ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time."

Police have appealed for anyone with any information on this incident to contact the investigation team at Ennis Garda Station on 065 6848100, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
