Hunter Matthews: Son of slain WWJ anchor Jim Matthews in critical condition after undergoing brain surgery
DETROIT, MICHIGAN: The son of a Michigan radio news anchor for WWJ who was killed in a murder-suicide attempt by a family friend underwent brain and ear surgery, after he tried to resist his father's killer. The boy is in a critical condition as of the present moment. Jim Matthews, employed as an evening anchor at a local radio station WWJ-AM (950) was killed during a murder-suicide attack in his residence in Chesterfield Township after he invited a 'frequent visitor' to his house outside Detroit.
Police were called to the residence shortly thereafter and found Matthews in an unresponsive state. His girlfriend, Nichole Guertin, 35, was also found seriously injured having been stabbed 35 times. According to the People, Guertin escaped the residence with their 5-year-old daughter, Rosie, before beckoning a driver to call 911. Authorities also found their 10-year-old son, Hunter, tied up in a closet suffering from blunt force trauma. Hunter was reportedly thrashed after he tried to fight off the known assailant who is hospitalized and yet to be named.

The 10-year-old's aunt, Ashley Quigley said Hunter is sedated after his critical surgery as he "goes through the biggest challenge he has yet to face". Quigley started a GoFundMe page to support her family, as she took her 5-year-old niece who suffered fewer injuries during the event. She described the attack on her sister's family as 'vicious' and 'needless.'
Authorities also discovered the 54-year-old suspect overdosed on heroin and suffered from self-inflicted wounds in the home's basement. The suspect was taken into police custody after he was revived by officials with the prescription narcotic Narcan. Chesterfield Police said the investigation was still ongoing. Although he is hospitalized he faces a series of charges for the attack, for which the authorities have yet to find a motive.

According to the police, the unnamed attacker has been a frequent visitor of the Mathhews' residence and is a close acquaintance of the family. He was reportedly invited inside the house prior to the attack. The unfortunate incident has left the locals in shock as they mourned the late anchor. Matthews spent nearly seven years as the radio station's overnight news anchor, Daily Mail reported. "He would often talk to co-workers about his children and his love for them and their adventures at school," the radio station wrote. "He was a consummate professional and was dedicated to WWJ and the broadcasting industry. He loved delivering the latest news to his listeners." The station added that "there have been many tears shed in our newsroom" in the wake of Matthews' sudden death, and that "our thoughts and prayers go out to Jim's family and friends."
