Bill Gates' daughter Jennifer Gates recently announced her engagement to Egyptian showjumper Nayel Nassar.
Jennifer took to Instagram on Wednesday revealing that Nassar, who helped his country qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, had proposed. The Microsoft founder's eldest child met Nassar at Stanford University, where they bonded over a mutual love for the equine sport.
"Horses are just one part of our life, but we love the sport," Gates told CNN's EQ equestrian show last year. "He's a professional, and I do this as an amateur. So, to be able to share our love and passion for horses with each other is just incredible."
Nassar helped Egypt qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in October last year by winning the CSIO4*-W Nations Cup of Rabat. His win led to the country's first Olympic qualification for the sport in 60 years.
In the year 2013, Nassar rode his way to a stunning victory in the fourth-annual Zoetis $1 million Grand Prix at HITS Saugerties, according to the Federation Equestre Internationale. In February this year, the talented showjumper and his golden horse Lordan won another prize of $216,000 at the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Wellington at the CP Palm Beach Masters CSI3*-W.
That said, Nayel comes from a privileged background himself. His parents, who run a successful architecture and interior design firm in Kuwait, brought him his first horse at age 10. The equestrian has largely credited his success to his parents for sending him to undergo top-notch training in Europe. After attending Stanford University, Nayel became a successful showjumper and is now managing his own training and sales business in California.
Jennifer appeared visibly surprised by the proposal in the picture posted to her Instagram, which appears to have been taken while the duo was on a ski trip. She is also seen flaunting a large diamond ring while leaning on Nassar. "Nayel Nassar, you are one of a kind. Absolutely swept me off my feet this past weekend, surprising me in the most meaningful location over one of our many shared passions," Jennifer wrote alongside a photo of the pair sitting on snow, adding that she "can't wait to spend the rest of our lives learning, growing, laughing and loving together."
Meanwhile, Nassar posted two other snowy photos from the proposal on his own Instagram account. "SHE SAID YES!!" he began.
"I'm feeling like the luckiest (and happiest) man in the world right about now," he captioned his pictures with his wife-to-be. "Jenn, you are everything I could have possibly imagined... and so much more. I can't wait to keep growing together through this journey called life, and I simply can't imagine mine without you anymore."
In conclusion, Nassar thanked Jennifer for "making every single day feel like a dream to me." Bill Gates is yet to release on a statement on her daughter's engagement. However, his wife Melinda expressed on Instagram how "thrilled" she was for the couple.
