What happened during the crash?

After the robbery, the police were following the trio during the night of March 1 near the Strip at Sahara in Henderson, Nevada. The Muskins were headed home from a shopping trip at Costco. During the ride, Alvarado attempted to flee from the vehicle with a gun in her right hand. At the intersection of Sunset and Stephanie, the suspect's car crashed into Muskin's vehicle, which had stopped at a traffic light. Alvarado then exited the car and started pointing the gun at the officers. However, it was the police who initially started shooting at her.

Alvarado then rolled into a sitting position and continued aiming her weapon at officers. She currently remains in critical condition after suffering gunshot wounds. Alvarado has an extensive criminal record that includes robbery and grand larceny, among others, according to Las Vegas News.

What is the response from the family?

After the arrest, she said, "I'm glad they caught the one that had the gun. I don't think she will ever get out so I'm happy about that." Their sons, Drew and Jon Muskin claimed, “My mom vaguely remembers she got jolted and then started hearing gunshots." “We’re all just very angry at these criminals. Nothing we can do about it, and we trust the justice system,” Drew Muskin said.

Before the death of their father, Drew had also stated, “It’s a miracle that he’s still alive. He’s having a hard time speaking, so we gave him pen and paper. He was able to write his name, so we were so thrilled to see that," as per WSAZ.

Fundraiser for the cause

The GoFundMe campaign note has been updated with the following message, "unfortunately, Herbert Muskin has passed away due to his injuries from the accident. Donations still needed and appreciated to help his wife Sherry. Thank you."

It continued, "Imagine surviving World War II and living to the age of 101, only to be injured by a stolen vehicle being chased by the police. This is what happened to Herbert Muskin, a World War II veteran living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Herbert Muskin was previously in good health and was even still driving. He was fearless and it is no surprise to anyone who knows him that he was still going strong at 101 years old. He was somewhat of a local legend and people would recognize him around town and thank him for his service. Before retiring in Las Vegas, he practiced dentistry in New York. His 101st birthday was covered by Fox5 Vegas.

Regarding the incident, it read, "On March 1, 2023, he was driving home after shopping at Costco with his wife and was struck by a stolen vehicle traveling 80 miles per hour that was being chased by the police. The story was covered extensively in the Las Vegas area news. Given Herbert's age and the intensity of the crash, he should have been killed, but Herbert was always a soldier and a survivor. Herbert Muskin has severe injuries including a broken neck. He was unresponsive at first but now he is showing signs of communication and life."

The note ended with, "Herbert has a long recovery ahead and he deserves the best medical care available. Herbert and his wife Sherry have scant funds saved and never expected to face this type of tragedy. Herbert was always a proud man and never needed anyone else for support before, but now here's a chance to show your appreciation for Herbert's service. Please help support Herbert and his family (he and his wife Sherry are married for 67 years) throughout this difficult time and pray for Herbert's recovery. Any donation, no matter how small, is appreciated, and even just sharing this link would help. Thank you and God bless."
