LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Schmigadoon’ star Dove Cameron confirms auditioning for the role of Glinda in Jon M Chu’s upcoming film version of 'Wicked' which will be a musical adaptation. The role eventually went to popstar Ariana Grande. However, the multi-talented Disney alum is not maintaining any ill feelings as she is “so excited for Ariana” and revealed the ‘Bang Bang’ singer is “a genuinely dear friend of mine.”

While addressing a press conference at a 'Schmigadoon' Season 2 FYC event in North Hollywood, the ‘Liv and Maddie’ star revealed about the role that she unsuccessfully auditioned for, “I know that for everybody who did go out for it, it was a very long process. It was one of the longer processes I’ve been a part of,” reports The Wrap. Talking to ET in 2019, Cameron revealed, “I don’t think everyone wants me to be Glinda but, I mean, it’s like the role of a lifetime,” before adding, “I’ve been dreaming of it since I was, like, 7. I mean, I should be so lucky to be considered.” 'Wicked' is slated to premiere on Nov 27, 2024.

‘I’m so excited for Ariana’

Talking to The Wrap, the ‘Boyfriend’ singer pondered on another fellow child star, Ariana Grande whom she called a “living icon”. “I’m so excited for Ariana. She’s a genuinely dear friend of mine. We met when we were super young. I think she’s gonna kill it,” spoke Cameron candidly before adding, “I think the whole cast is phenomenal head to toe. So, like, as a fan, I’m really, really excited to see it.”

The two multi-talented performers indeed have a long history together. Cameron and Grande started their journeys on Disney and Nickelodeon respectively where Cameron appeared on Disney's ‘Liv and Maddie’ from 2013 to 2017, and Grande on Nickelodeon's ‘Victorious’ and ‘Sam & Cat’ from 2010 to 2014. They also took part in ‘Hairspray Live!’ together back in 2016.

Dove Cameron and Kristen Chenoweth

Kristen Chenoweth, who played Cameron’s onscreen mother in ‘Descendants’, is also an “idol” for the ‘Bloodshot’ songstress. The original Gilda, Chenoweth, who essayed the role in the original Broadway production of 'Wicked' from 2003 to 2004 opined on 'The Talk' in 2019, “I feel like who would be great as Glinda on film would be Dove Cameron,” and further added, “I’ve done two movies with her, and I’ve played her mother twice, so I would see that as passing the crown so to speak.”

In 2021, Cameron told ET that “Kristin Chenoweth, when I was 17, gave me a necklace,” and added, “Like, a heavy weighted gold necklace that’s just on a dog tag chain, but it’s in the shape of a little pick. It says, ‘The wise avoid the wicked.’ And I’m a huge Wicked fan," reports J-14

'Dove would've been a great Glinda'

The fans are divided in the revelation though. One fan commented, "I love dove but she doesn’t have the vocal ability to hit galindas high notes like Ariana does. She’s still an amazing vocalist tho." While another said, "Why is all this coming out now..and to all the miserable haters, the role has been decided. No use in crying," to which a Cameron fan replied, "First off, dove isnt “just coming” out saying this. she stated this when word that ariana was chosen hit news outlets. not to mention both dove and ari have stated for years that their dream role is glinda. i doubt dove is truly crying n losing sleep over it."

An Ariana stan said, "She could've save us so much time that ariana won't get the role and would be actually working on music ... But it's whatever, Ariana could've been alphabea instead of that black woman.... And dove would be glinda... It's all about the vocals at the end of the day." "We love Glinda #2. Hopefully she has another movie blockbuster role coming & she will be able to play the part on Broadway," commented an Ariana fan. "Dove would've been a great Glinda," commented a user before adding, "Doesn't mean Ariana didn't deserve it, I can't wait to see her in the big screen as Glinda. I love her." An Arianator, however, said, "I love dove and all but I’m happy that Ariana got her role especially since it was her dream role and I want dove to release her album soon so.." "Woah dove would’ve been so good hopefully she gets casted in something big soon," sounds another fan wishful. "She would have been perfect. What the heck? Unless she's not as good with high notes as Ariana," commented another.
