The Republican Party is currently stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to Donald Trump. The former President firmly refuses to condemn Vladimir Putin, which has earned him a lot of blowback, but not from the GOP. The latest instance of this occurring comes on March 29, when Trump asked Putin for dirt on Hunter Biden. The shocking request quickly went viral on social media, with the net having plenty to say.

Known to be a staunch ally of the Russian dictator, Trump has so far refused to slam Putin for the invasion of Ukraine. In late February, he even praised Putin as a "genius" and "savvy", while Russia launched its "special military operation" in Ukraine. Republicans quickly distanced themselves from Trump after that, with many including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy issuing a rare rebuke of those comments.

However, the party still needs Trump's endorsements and deep pockets if its plans to retake Congress in the upcoming midterms, which is why the condemnation has been far and few in between. The lack of consequences has allowed Trump to rachet up his support for Putin, visible in his latest comments on March 29.

Trump wants dirt on Hunter Biden

The former President spoke to Real America's Voice Network's John Solomon and Amanda Head from Mar-a-Lago, in an interview that was published on March 29. Speaking to the duo, Trump said, "One thing, while I'm on your show, as long as Putin now is not exactly a fan of our country, let him explain, where did — because Chris Wallace wouldn't let me ask the question — why did the mayor of Moscow’s wife give the Bidens, both of them, $3.5 million dollars? That's a lot of money."

He then added, "I would think Putin would know the answer to that. I think he should release it." Trump was referring to the money Biden received from Elena Baturina, the widow of former Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov. Way back in September 2020, the GOP released a report claiming that Baturina transferred the sum to Biden's company Rosemont Seneca Thornton on February 14, 2014. It's unclear why the money was sent, giving birth to a large number of conspiracy theories Trump has happily fuelled.

However, Trump himself has links to Luzhkov that he did not mention. Back in the 1990s, Trump pursued several deals in Moscow including an underground mall and two major hotels. In fact, as recently as 2016, he was attempting to expand to Russia, with plans to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. All these deals have been reported to link to Luzhkov, who died in 2019.

'It's clear who Trump aligns with'

"So much of the world is united against Putin except for trump who continues to ask the murderous autocrat for help," slammed journalist Molly Jong-Fast. A former federal prosecutor tweeted, "So let's get this straight: former President Donald Trump is now asking Russia's Vladimir Putin, who is currently waging unprovoked war and causing massive suffering in Ukraine, to help dig up dirt on the current US president and his family. Appalling." Rep. Ted Lieu commented, "Vladimir Putin is a war criminal and a butcher. Here are two responses— President Biden: This man cannot remain in power. Trump: Please help me Vladimir. I am damn proud of our current President. And nauseated by the former President."

"The traitorous a-----e is STILL asking Putin for things to hurt our President with, how long is the GOP going to insist trump was "tough on Russia?"," one person tweeted. Another said, "In 2016, Donald Trump asked Russia to find Hillary Clinton's emails. Now he is asking for Putin to release dirt on Joe Biden. It is pretty clear who Trump aligns with." A third slammed, "Why are there American flags behind him? There should be Russian flags."
