So, Dickinson arrives at one of the Army hospitals and is looking to meet Whitman. She absolutely loves his writings and wants to ask him what would it take for her to write like him? Whitman, who seems to be pretty high on life, tells her that she doesn’t need to be like him. To be a great poet, Emily needs to stop thinking and start feeling. She needs to start feeling the pain of those who are suffering or fallen so that she could write whatever she wants to.

When Dickinson asks him, that she is not able to understand what he is saying. Whitman says that she should stop understanding what he says and what is poetry? All she should do is feel everything and then she can do whatever she wants to.

After the meeting, they go to a bar where Emily asks him about writing about dying soldiers. To which, Walt replies that for a poet every feeling is the same, so if she is feeling the pain of a soldier then she should feel the pleasure of love. He asks her what turns her on? To which, she replied, “Sue.” When Walt encourages her to take her name loudly, she confesses that she loves Sue and if she was on her death bed right now, all she would want is Sue.

In the ending moments, Walt tells Dickinson that she should stop understanding poetry and feel it. The episode concludes with a poem that said:

“This is my letter to the world,
 That never wrote to me.
The simple news that nature told,
With tender majesty.

Her message is committed,
To hands, I cannot see.
For love of her, sweet countrymen,
Judge tenderly for me!”

‘Dickinson’ returns to Apple TV+ with a new episode every Friday.
