‘I respect him. I thank him’

As per Hoover's Facebook profile, he was a doctor at the Ascension Hospital in Detroit. One of his patients, Julia, told WXYZ, “I went on Facebook and I saw his picture and thought oh, he must've gotten an award. So I put my glasses on and my daughter was outside with the dog and I just started screaming, 'Oh, my God. Oh, my God.’”

Julia had known Hoover since 2007. She said, “At that point in 2008, he said if I didn’t do my first surgery then — which was putting plates and screws into my neck — that I would basically be in a wheelchair within three to five years. I respect him. I thank him because my life in the last 15 years could’ve been way different without him. And he kept me moving for my kids, now for my grandson, so he’s changed my life.”

‘This is a loss for the whole community’

Hoover's former colleague, NiNa Serifovic, said, “I just want all to know what a great human being we lost. He was passionate about his work and cared for his patients. He was a working bee. Never did I see him mad. This is a loss for the whole community, not just for those that knew him.”

An Ascension Michigan’s spokesperson reportedly noted, “Devon Hoover, MD was a dedicated and well-respected member of the Ascension Michigan family and will be greatly missed by our community. Our sincerest condolences and heartfelt prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow associates during this incredibly difficult time.”

‘He was one of the first neighbors to take me under their wing’

Hoover's neighbor, Paddy Lynch, paid tribute to the neurosurgeon on Facebook. He wrote, “Devon Hoover was an exceptional person in nearly every way. A loving son and brother, a brilliant, accomplished surgeon, an unrivaled collector and caretaker of all things beautiful, and a champion of art and culture. But perhaps most admirably, he was beyond generous with his time and his treasure. He was one of the first neighbors to take me under their wing, offering old house advice, support, and kindness all along the way.”

Lynch added, “Hospitality was certainly his specialty as he never hesitated to open his spectacular home to countless neighbors, friends, and charitable organizations. For a man small in stature, he was indeed larger than life. Like so many of our friends and neighbors, Nhu and I are still in shock and totally heartbroken. I pray that there’s a heaven and that Devon is there now, drinking wine and resting from his many labors. May his good life be remembered and may his memory be eternal.”
