'He gave me life': Patients rally online for justice after top neurosurgeon Devon Hoover is found dead at home

'Always calm and pleasant despite the mountains of tasks'

In a Facebook group titled 'Justice for Dr. Devon Hoover,' his colleague Tracey Steeves wrote, "Add me to the group of the shocked and saddened over the senseless loss of this amazing human being and surgeon. I worked with him at St. John Hospital for 20 years, at times I would be helping his post-surgical patients out of bed for their PT, and he would show up to round on them. His personality was that of caring, kindness, and understanding. Treated people like family. Never rushed, never arrogant. Always a smile. Always calm and pleasant despite the mountains of tasks before him as a physician and surgeon. He healed so many; giving many a second chance at regaining their quality of life and out of pain and suffering. He will be very missed by so many. Virtual hugs to all who have a whole in their lives and hearts from losing Devon Hoover. May he rest in peace."

"At 22 years old, I accepted my first PA position at Ascension St. John. I had the tremendous pleasure to work with Dr. Hoover and his extremely talented neurosurgery team. Being so young and surrounded by such great people, it helped mold my career to where I am today. Dr. Hoover was a special person. It was an honor getting to know him. His humbleness, acceptance, calmness, and talent was second to none. Although Dr. Hoover is no longer with us today, I know that the so many people he got to touch will forever carry on his legacy. It is no surprise to see the outpouring love for him as he has given so much to so many people. Rest in peace my friend," wrote Romario Yousif.

'A man who no one can say something bad about'

Neuro nurse Christina Marie Mihelich wrote, "I’ve been a neuro nurse at Ascension St. John for 27 years and have known Dr. Hoover 20 of them. He was just as kind, caring, and compassionate today as when I first met him! I’m just so shocked and saddened by his death and how abruptly his life was cut short knowing that he still had so much to do and so many lives to touch. I am truly honored to have known and worked with a man of his stature and kind nature. My heart goes out to his family and all who knew and loved him. He surely will be missed."

In another touching tribute, Hoover's colleague Osama Nicola Nunu wrote, "Life can be confusing and unfair when we lose loved ones unexpectedly. What? Who? When? What do you mean? With shocked faces we received the bad news. It hurts deeply. No this is not real. It is just a bad dream. Hope it passes but no it is not a dream!! It is for real!! Last weekend, we lost a beloved colleague. A very talented doctor, Dr Devon Hoover. A man who no one can say something bad about. He was a true gentleman. He was genuine and loved to help people. Everyone at Ascension St. John in Detroit who knew him is hurt and disturbed by the news. We pray that justice will be prevailed. We pray for the soul of this great surgeon. We pray for his family. May his memory be eternal."

"My condolences and prayers for his family and friends I worked with Dr. Hoover years ago in the OR until I had to undergo six back surgeries myself. I would then see him in the office for follow-up appointments. My 103 year old grandmother was even a patient of his. He was an outstanding person and surgeon who cared about his patients and their well-being. Dr. Hoover still had so much more to do in this lifetime and more lives to change with his knowledge and expertise. I pray for law enforcement and detectives to find the person or persons who are responsible for this senseless act and get justice for Dr. Hoover and his family," wrote Lori Ann DeMars.
