Constance Wu welcomes baby girl with rocker boyfriend Ryan Kattner: Here's the lowdown on their love story
Congratulations are in order for 'Crazy Rich Asians' star Constance Wu! She and her boyfriend, musician Ryan Kattner, welcomed their first child together over the summer. A source told E! News, "They are doing great, and they're so excited and happy." The 38-year old had never publicly revealed she was pregnant and has steered clear of the public eye ever since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March.
Back in February, Constance was photographed walking the red carpet at the Queerties 2020 Awards Reception and, before that, at the 2020 Costume Designers Guild Awards in January. The actress had even labeled her Instagram and Twitter accounts "defunct" after sharing her last posts in May 2020 and December 2019 on each respective site.
Her next film, 'I Was a Simple Man', will premiere at Sundance, which takes place in January 2021. Let's hope we get a post-pregnancy appearance from her, then. As Constance keeps her life so private, here's the little we know.
Who is Ryan Kattner?
Kattner is a musician, composer and screenwriter who is the frontman of the rock band Man Man under the stage name Honus Honus. In May, he released the album 'Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In-Between', the group's first in seven years. He dropped his first-ever solo album in 2016, titled 'Use Your Delusion'. In the same year, he was also credited as a music supervisor on Fox's 'The Exorcist' TV series.
When did they start dating?
The exact date is not known. In February 2018, Wu's life made headlines after she split with her boyfriend Ben Hethcoat after dating him for four years. In fact, months later, Wu opened up about the backlash she had received for dating non-Asian men.
Prior to this, she had also been linked to Jim Sturgess. “Hate and criticism in any form do not feel good… But I do think having the freedom to express things that are painful to certain people and start conversations about deeper issues [is a good thing],” she told StyleCaster at the time.
“Unfortunately, sometimes those conversations are targeted, but I’m very confident in the choices I make and why I make them, so if and when they are targeted at me, if this is a means for someone else to figure out and discover the things that matter to them or the things they feel about themselves, then I’m all for it. Because I’m OK.”
It's estimated that she started dating Kattner in 2018 itself, though she did not reveal his name at the time. Describing her new man, she said he was "not really an animal person, but he’s a great person person."
Wu is all set to return with the highly-anticipated sequel to 'Crazy Rich Asians', alongside Henry Golding. “They’ve got the two books that ['Crazy Rich Asians' author] Kevin Kwan wrote still to come and they’re trying to find an angle to convert those from page to script to film,” Golding, 33, told Digital Spy in September, noting that director Jon M Chu and his team were still “trying to crack the script” at the time.
“It’s a very complicated process because, visually, sometimes a novel doesn’t make as much sense as it would on the screen in a direct adaptation. So, you have to really change it up to make it interesting.”
