Lili Reinhart defends boyfriend after ‘Cole Sprouse is over party’ trends, says cancel culture is destructive

With everyone on lockdown and little to no paparazzi to bring salacious celebrity gossip and photos, people it would seem, have resorted to mischief to satiate their need for drama

The hashtag “Cole Sprouse Is Over Party” is trending on Twitter. At the time of writing this, close to 20,000 people were tweeting about it. Why is the ‘Riverdale’ and ‘The Suite Life of Zack and Cody’ actor getting canceled on Twitter? The hashtag is really not a good source for an answer. Facts regarding the supposed “canceling” seem to be missing and the trend is as far away from any answer as possible.

It has certainly not got anything to do with the rumors of him cheating on his on- and off-screen girlfriend, Lili Reinhart, who plays Betty Cooper on The CW teen drama series ‘Riverdale’. In fact, only a couple of days ago, Sprouse took to Twitter to address what he called baseless accusations. “I tolerate a lot of rumors and slander from people online claiming to be my fans. Fans who feel entitled to my privacy precisely because I never indulge them,” Sprouse wrote. “But attacking my friends, baseless accusations, leaking my address, and sending death threats are all qualities of insanity and fanaticism.”

Reinhart, Sprouse's girlfriend, addressed the trend as well as the rumors of him cheating on her with Kaia Gerber. In a series of tweets, she wrote, "Twitter is such a vile place. It’s so easy to say shit behind your f*****g phone, isn’t it? This is why people choose to keep their relationships private... this is why people don’t have social media.. because of this bullying."

She further added, "I don’t tolerate any of that s***. Bully me? Sure fine. But attacking someone for literally no reason, just for the sake of a f*****g twitter trend? Please.... reassess yourself and your ego before you send another tweet into the abyss."

She said, "It’s easy to criticize someone and spew hate because it makes you feel like you have some sort of power over them. Truth is... you don’t. Saying you hate someone or don’t like them gives you absolutely no power over them," adding, "You need to tweet about someone you literally don’t know in order to feel like you have something going on in your life? That’s sad. It’s really f*****g sad."

Reinhart concluded with, "You want to feel validated or important? Attacking someone online won’t give that to you. Do something helpful with your time and be better. I refuse to keep my mouth shut about things like this. You have no idea how destructive this can be to someone. To anyone. It’s abusive. There is no excuse for this. You need god in your life or some form of help if you participate in cancel culture."

So, once again, why is Cole Sprouse canceled, and why are we throwing a party to celebrate that? People on Twitter seemed genuinely confused about it themselves. A Twitter user pointed out: “Cole is out here playing animal crossing and eating beans and mind his business and y'all trending #colesprouseisoverparty.”

In fact, aside from questions about why he’s getting canceled, and the occasional photos of Mr. Moseby (Phill Lewis), the uptight manager of the Tipton Hotel in ‘The Suite Life of Zack and Cody’ who hated the twins’ guts on the show, the only thing that seemed to populate the trend was fancams.

For those who don’t know, a fancam is basically footage focusing on a single member of a band, usually while the group is performing. Any fan's footage can be a fancam, though many die-hards like to follow fansites for more professional footage of their favorite member, notes Refinery 29 in a detailed explainer. It’s a K-pop trend. And it has right now, mutated to footage of just about any celebrity.

In that spirit, #colesprouseisoverparty was full of fancams from BTS members, Robert Pattinson, Timothée Chalamet, Nolan North, Dylan O’Brien, and many, many more. Entertaining as these fancams may be, it still doesn’t answer the core question: why is Cole Sprouse canceled, and why are we throwing a party to celebrate that?

The answer to that question may be found in a series of trends that have taken place on Twitter off late. With everyone on lockdown and little to no paparazzi to bring salacious celebrity gossip and photos, people it would seem, have resorted to mischief to satiate their need for drama.

According to a recent W Magazine feature, many celebrities have fallen prey to a rumor-mill. It all started with Timothée Chalamet. An old clip of Chalamet reciting a line from John Patrick Shanley’s play ‘Tennessee’ was shared out of context. It contained the homophobic slur “d***”. Subsequently, although before the context of the clip was brought forward, #TimotheeChalametisoverparty trended, and the actor was accused of using the slur on his own volition.

A #DemiLovatoIsOverParty attempt was also made under the guise of Lovato supposedly bashing fellow women in the entertainment industry. There was also an #AdamDriverIsOverParty. His New Yorker interview about joining the marines post the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack was taken out of context. “It wasn’t against Muslims. It was: We were attacked. I want to fight for my country against whoever that is," he said in the interview, which was taken out of context.

On the OutOfTheLoop subreddit, where people pose questions about topics they don't understand, #ColeSprouseIsOverParty was discussed as well. A Redditor responded to the query with, "The general consensus is that people started the hashtag out of pure... boredom? And that he didn't do anything," adding that there was also a video of him saying the N-word circulating that was dismissed as fake. "Basically it seems like a whole lot of nothing," the Redditor concluded.
