WOLFSBURG, GERMANY: A group of climate protesters glued themselves to the floor of Volkswagen’s Autostadt facility in Germany and demanded a "bowl to urinate and defecate in a decent manner while we are glued."

Nine members of the Scientist Rebellion activist group protested climate change by gluing themselves on the showroom floor at the Volkswagen facility on Wednesday, October 19. When it was time to close up for the night, however, floor officials locked the doors and switched off the lights and heating per protocol. The protesters admitted that the carmaker support their right to protest but neglected to give them a "bowl" to urinate and defecate while being glued. Some of the activists are also undergoing a hunger strike.

The protesters demanded that the German government move to decarbonize its transport sector in a bid to fight climate change. They also called on Volkswagen, one of the world's largest car manufacturers, to do its part in the fight against pollution. Gianluca Grimalda, a researcher with the Kiel Institute think tank who is a member of the protest group, posted on Twitter Wednesday that 15 people had "occupied the Porsche pavilion" at the Autostadt museum adjoining the carmaker’s factory in Wolfsburg. “Nine of us glued to the floor and some of us on hunger strike until our demands to decarbonize the German transport sector are met,” he wrote. “[Volkswagen] told us that they supported our right to protest, but they refused our request to provide us with a bowl to urinate and defecate in a decent manner while we are glued, and have turned off the heating.”

The scientist complained that "we can’t order our food, we must use the one provided by Volkswagen." He later added, "Lights off. Random unannounced checks by security guards with bright torches. Police just came in."

At around 2 am local time, Grimalda shared a photo of the protesters "getting ready for the first night of sleep." However, it was unclear whether anyone in the group had urinated or defecated at that point.

The following day, Grimalda said his hands were swollen "After 24 hours of remaining glued to the floor" and a doctor had to be called in. "After 24 hours of remaining glued to the floor and a nearly sleepless night, my hand got swollen. The Wolkswagen [sic] manager had initially refused to let a doctor in but eventually accepted," he tweeted. The doctor apparently warned him of the possibility of "life-threatening blood clots" in his hand and "recommended an immediate transfer to a hospital." Grimalda agreed and was taken to a hospital, where he plans to continue his hunger strike.

Scientist Rebellion has demanded in a petition that those in positions of authority must take appropriate action to address the true possibility of a global apocalypse, saying the scientific community has historically used its authority to inform society of the danger. "The response of scientists the world over must be decisive," the group urged the public. "How do we honor the public's growing trust in our expert community in the face of looming catastrophes of climate and ecological breakdown? It is simple: academics must share with the public what they share with each other about the world's response to climate change and biodiversity loss." The petition has already received more than 200 signatures at the time of publication. Meanwhile, it is also important to note that Volkswagen has transitioned heavily into electric cars in recent years, and was the top-selling maker of EVs in Europe last year, Metro reported.
