Cher hopes the ground 'opens' under Trump at Gettysburg and 'we never see his ugly face again'

Cher, one of Donald Trump's most vocal critics, took to social media to seemingly fantasize about the president's death and suggested that the ground "opens" while he's at Gettysburg so "we never see him again."

The 74-year-old popularly referred to as the Goddess of Pop has slammed Trump on social media repeatedly throughout his presidency and recently took to Twitter to proclaim that he should not be allowed to set foot in Gettysburg.

Writing in her usual all-caps style, the singer posted, "IF 4 TIME DRAFT DODGER HAS THE MENDACITY 2 STEP A TOE ON GETTYSBURG,NATIONAL CEMETERY,TRYS 2MAKE SPEACH,COMPARES HIMSELF 2 LINCOLN,HOPE GROUND OPENS,& WE NEVER SEE HIS UGLY FACE AGAIN. trump says”I’M WAR TIME PRESIDENT” HARRIET COULD KICK HIS ASS & LED BLK SOLDIERS IN UNION ARMY."

Cher was likely referring to Trump announcing on Twitter last week that he was considering delivering his presidential nomination speech on the night of the convention, which is on August 27, either at the Great Battlefield of Gettysburg or the White House.

"We have narrowed the Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speech, to be delivered on the final night of the Convention (Thursday), to two locations — The Great Battlefield of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and the White House, Washington, DC," the president tweeted.

Trump suggesting Gettysburg as one of the locations where his nomination could be confirmed has not gone down well with most, including Cher. The town was the site of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War and has been historically seen as the turning point for the Union army against the Confederates, who were defending the slave-owning South. It was also the town where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his iconic Gettysburg Address, and many have pointed out there is a degree of irony in Trump picking the location considering he has repeatedly come to the defense of confederate statues and symbols.

The president, however, has compared himself to Lincoln and declared that he would, one day, be remembered fondly because the media "excoriated" his predecessor just like they are doing to him now. "You know when Abraham Lincoln made that Gettysburg Address speech, the great speech, you know he was ridiculed?" he had told a rally in Billings, Montana, in 2018. "And he was excoriated by the fake news. They had fake news then. They said it was a terrible, terrible speech."

"Fifty years after his death they said it may have been the greatest speech ever made in America," he continued. "I have a feeling that's going to happen with us. In different ways, that's going to happen with us." Earlier this year, he seemingly drew another parallel between him and Lincoln when he claimed he was a "wartime president" because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Asked in March by Fox News’ John Roberts whether he considers his country to be on a ‘wartime footing’ to tackle Covid-19, which had, at the time, claimed 120 lives, Trump responded in the affirmative. "I view it as a — in a sense, a wartime president, that's what we've been fighting," he said. "It's a very tough situation here. We have to do things. We have to close parts of an economy that six weeks ago were the best they've ever been."
