Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher: How blind date sparked whirlwind romance and ten-year fairytale marriage
Carrie Underwood is, undoubtedly, one of the most successful country music artists of all time. But, apart from her stellar career, the singer is also known to the public for her marriage to former NHL player Mike Fisher. The two, who got married in 2010, have two sons together and are considered one of the most prominent pairs in both music and ice hockey worlds. What's even more endearing is the history of their relationship and how the couple got together.
Whirlwind Romance
Underwood was introduced to Fisher by her bassist Mark Childers. An Ottawa Senators hockey player at the time, Fisher and Underwood met at a backstage meet-and-greet following one of her concerts. Their encounter proved successful and the two decided to meet again. Underwood, talking about her first impression of Fisher, said, "Hot, hot, hot." But, the start of their relationship was rocky as Underwood and Fisher couldn't see each other frequently as one was based in Nashville and the other in Canada. Talking about it, Underwood, on VH1's 'Behind the Music', said, "I mean, can I make dating more difficult? Let's get a hockey guy who lives in another country. Awesome." They started dating long-distance and met in person three months later.
Soon, Underwood and Fisher took the next big step when the athlete proposed to the star in 2009. Confirming the news of Toronto Sun, Fisher said, "It's true. We're both obviously excited and very happy." Then, after two years of dating, the couple tied the knot at the Ritz-Carlton resort on Lake Oconee, Georgia. Underwood and Fisher then spent time between Nashville and Peterborough, Ontario, until, in 2011, Fisher got drafted by the Nashville Predators.
Talking about it, he said, "I was praying a few days before about moving teams. I was just so frustrated and said 'God, if you have me go somewhere take care of it, look after it,' and he sure did that. He put me in a place I was comfortable with and I think that's part of the reason that this is the place I'm supposed to be and that's comforting for sure."
Five years after their marriage, in 2015, Underwood and Fisher welcomed their first child together, a son named Isaiah. Soon, in 2019, they welcomed their second child, a son named Jacob Bryan Fisher. Underwood, on Instagram, said, "Jacob Bryan Fisher entered the world in the wee hours of the morning on Monday...his mom, dad, and big brother couldn’t be happier for God to trust them with taking care of this little miracle! Our hearts are full, our eyes are tired and our lives are forever changed. Life is good."
Speaking to People Magazine in 2019, Underwood said, "I had dated guys and kind of knew, like, 'No.' Nothing was ever really wrong, but nothing was really right either. With him, it was like a good partnership. It was an easy relationship to be in. I feel like he is the person I was meant to be with."
