During an interview with MSNBC on Sunday, February 14, discussing the second impeachment trial against former President Donald Trump, House Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Calif) suggested that God is a woman. Swalwell was discussing the Democrats' decision to not subpoena additional witnesses. The second impeachment trial ended on Saturday when Trump was acquitted by the United States Senate of the charge of inciting an insurrection in relation to the events on Capitol Hill on January 6, during which five people died.

When asked by MSNBC host Nicole Wallace about the Democrats' decision, Swalwell said, "The choice was, do we chase those people, not knowing what they’re going to say, to the courts for years or do we go forward with the powerful, thundering case that we have? And also knowing that Mitch McConnell was already telling us that he believed the challenge was a jurisdictional one.”

He continued that calling witnesses would not have changed Republicans' minds on voting to acquit Trump of the charge, saying, "So we could have called God herself, and the Republicans weren’t going to be willing to convict, so we’re proud of the case we have put forward."

Swalwell served as the House impeachment manager, trying to convince at least 60 percent of the Senate to convict the former president. However, his role in the capacity was brought into question following last year's reports that a suspected Chinese intelligence operative Fang Fang aka Christine Fang had taken part in fundraising activity for Swalwell's 2014 re-election campaign and helped place at least one intern in his office. She also reportedly interacted with Swalwell at multiple events over the course of several years.

Senator Rand Paul and other Republicans questioned Swalwell serving as the House impeachment manager, with Paul tweeting, "This afternoon we have been lectured to by Eric Swalwell, a guy accused of consorting with a Chinese spy. How appropriate!"

Swalwell's latest statements have not gone over well on social media, with many calling out the Democrat for identifying God as a woman. Conservative lawyer Jenna Ellis tweeted on Swalwell, "This is the leftist 'unity.' Eric Swalwell mocks truth by intentionally misgendering God."

One user tweeted, "He’s acting like a fool, and I’m being nice here. Some minister needs to tell him he’s not very smart, playing God for a fool. Maybe swallwell has to learn the hard way. Seems like the type." However, some users came to Swalwell's defense. One user tweeted, "GENDER DOES NOT APPLY TO GOD...GOD IS OUR CREATOR AND SAVIOR NOT A MAN OR WOMAN." Another wrote, "If there is a God, he/she almost certainly does not have a gender, and addressing God as feminine is something that has been done for a long time now. It's not like it's something that started with Swalwell."

Swalwell is not the only Democrat to have come under fire for theological reasons. Rep Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) was criticized last month for praying in the name of a Hindu God and tweaking the Hebrew word "amen" into a statement about gender.
