Alvis Shrewsbury: Wyoming County inmate who suffered 'broken ribs and black eyes' in custody dies in jail
RALEIGH COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA: A man named Alvis Shrewsbury, from Wyoming, was declared dead after serving 19 days at Southern Regional Jail in Raleigh County. After being accused of a second DUI, Shrewsbury turned himself in on August 29, according to WBTV.
Shrewsbury made daily calls to his loved ones while he was imprisoned. But as time passed, his family members' concerns grew as a result of his appearance during video conversations. Shrewsbury's unusual tendency to put his head down and avoid eye contact during video chats was observed by family members. "After we were talking to him on the 10th (of September), he'd already been beaten. His face was black," his daughter Miranda Smith said to WBTV. Speaking with his mother over a call, Alvis passed on a dismal message, she said. "He said, 'Mom if I don't come home, I love you. I want you to know I love you," mother Anna Shrewsbury said to WBTV. Shrewsbury informed his family about the jail's circumstances during the course of his days there. "He was telling us about his ribs being broken. It was hard to breathe. He hadn't had a bowel movement in over a week and nothing was being done about it. He was calling the nurse's station for help," his daughter Smith said.

Later, a Wyoming County Sheriff's deputy informed his mother that Shrewsbury was dead after being taken to a nearby hospital during a visit on the weekend. "I told my babies he would be fine," Smith said on her father’s passing. "There's a million people out there that I don't know. But they belong to someone. My dad was someone," Smith added as per WBTV.
Shrewsbury was the seventh inmate to die at the Southern Regional Jail in Raleigh County during the course of the previous year, according to the Register-Herald. Since September 2021, four other inmates have passed while detained at the institution. The list includes Kyle Robinson who was discovered unconscious in his cell by jail personnel in September 2021. The Register-Herald stated that John Lewis Jarrell passed away a month later after spending a week in jail. Quantez Burks passed away in March, less than two days after checking himself into the facility and Richard Wriston passed away that month, one day after checking into the hospital.
The West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is in charge of Shrewsbury's body, according to WBTV. The deceased's body is now subjected to an impartial autopsy by the family.
