Brooklyn Shooting: 4 NYPD cops and 3 civilians injured in gunfire near liquor shop, suspect dead

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK: At least seven people, including 4 NYPD officers and three civilians were rushed to the hospital on Thursday, July 8, after a police-involved shooting at night in Brooklyn. According to a tweet sent out by NYPD News, the incident occurred in the area of Halsey Street and Wilson Avenue in front of Boardwalk Wine and Spirits in Bushwick around 10:30 pm.

The residents were warned to expect a large police presence in the area, but no further information was provided on the circumstances. A spokesperson from the Fire Department of New York told PIX11 that four officers and at least two civilians were transported by EMS to local area hospitals. One of the officers was reported to be in serious condition. But apart from that, no other details were immediately available regarding the nature of their injuries.

The police later told PIX11 one civilian was shot and no officers were struck by gunfire. It is not known if the civilians taken for medical treatment were directly involved in the shooting. According to a report by ABC7, several people were shot. the report places the number of people injured at seven. The investigation is currently underway.

Chief of NYPD patrol Juanita Holmes held a press conference late at night at the scene to clarify the conflicting reports. "The officers exited their vehicle and approached a group of people gathered in front of 95A Halsey... they observed three individuals who appeared to have sustained gunshot wounds. The officers were informed that an armed man fled the scene on foot turning westbound onto Wilson Avenue. The officers immediately gave chase. Bodycam cameras were activated. I have reviewed the footage. It shows the officers approaching a man halfway down the block, crouched on the sidewalk in front of 520, Wilson Avenue," she said.

She added: "They observed the man holding a firearm in his left hand and gave the command to the man to drop the firearm. The man does not comply and instead raises firearm in the direction of the officers. The officers then discharge their service weapon, striking the gunman." The name of the gunman has not been released by the police.

The suspect has been moved to the hospital, she said, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect's firearm was recovered at the scene. Apart from this, there were three other firearms also recovered from the scene, although it is not known who the guns belonged to at this time. The officers involved in the shooting were taken to a local hospital for "observation only." She also said that three of the victims shot on Halsey street were being treated at an area hospital.
