A Florida judge on Monday permanently banned the release of some autopsy images, videos, and other data relating to the inquiry into the death of comedian Bob Saget. Circuit Judge Vincent Chiu announced the decision at a court hearing in Orlando after Saget's widow Kelly Rizzo and his three daughters requested a permanent injunction against the medical examiner's office and the Orange County Sheriff to prevent the release of any records related to the death of the 'Full House' star.

Saget, 65, was found dead at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando by hotel security on January 9 after he failed to check out on time. The security team member, who went to the room to check on Saget, tried to perform CPR after calling 911. A statement released by the comedian's family in the days following Saget's death said he died from head trauma, "He accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep." However, the official autopsy report released on February 11 showed the injuries were far more severe than a mere "slip and fall" accident. The autopsy determined the cause of death to be "blunt head trauma" that resulted in multiple fractures to the skull and hemorrhaging in the brain.

As new details about his injuries surfaced, questions were raised about why and how Saget's death was ruled an accident with no suspected foul play. Some people even demanded authorities reopen the investigation. Saget's family then filed a lawsuit to block the release of some records, citing privacy concerns.

Monday's court order means that of the 147 photos taken at the scene of Saget’s death, 90 photos that show his body and personal items will be permanently sealed. The remaining 57 can be made public, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Police bodycam footage of the outside of Saget’s room can also be released, the report said.

“Nothing that we’re going to do today obviously is going to take away the pain of your loss,” the judge told Saget’s family in court. “But the hope is that what we can do today by entering this injunction is to allow you a little bit of space and privacy to travel that.”

Unanswered questions

Saget was discovered dead in his bed, prompting questions about what caused his horrific injuries. According to a toxicology report, Saget's body had no illicit drugs or poisons. One theory that has since surfaced is that he fell in his hotel's tiled bathroom and sustained deadly injuries, but was able to crawl back into his bed before dying of his injuries.

Experts are also questioning how carefully Saget's death was investigated and what caused such a "significant blow to the head." Looking over the data, one expert concluded that the injuries were compatible with being hit with a baseball bat or falling 30 feet.

Saget was also Covid positive at the time of his death, albeit this did not play a role in his death, according to medical examiner Joshua Stephany's assessment.

Dr Megan Ranney, an emergency physician, expressed her dissatisfaction with the autopsy results and urged that Saget's family be informed. "Hi. ICYMI: This is not a 'slip & fall'. This is not a minor concussion. This is MAJOR head trauma. My condolences to Saget's friends & family. I hope that they get answers as to what really happened," she tweeted.
