Those watching 'Bering Sea Gold' would know the last couple of episodes have been rough on Ken Kerr of the Myrtle Irene. In his attempt to mine for gold despite a severe storm warning, Kerr continued and that landed him and his dredge in mortal peril. While he and his crew made it out safe, the same couldn't be said about Irene after it was left battered and bruised by the storm. With this slowing the skipper down, he risks losing his title to Shawn Pomrenke, who despite the late start is fast catching up in the race.

The other captains weren't far behind as they inched closer to the target before the winter season set in. Kris Kelly was determined to get some gold by working in the trenches behind the AU Crabber where he also assisted them with repairs and diving. Emily Riedel of the Eroica made some major progress as diver Daryl found some bit of gold at the bottom. Coming to their assistance was Steve Riedel, her father. Riedel is a familiar presence on the show and only time will tell how this season pans out for the unorthodox miner.

Vernon Adkison found some success at Goldbottom Creek, but the synopsis teases a surprise development as he gets his daughter, Elaine, to do the diving. The upcoming episode titled 'Gold is Thicker Than Blood' will also see more of Riedel after his appearance in the previous chapter. The official synopsis reads: "Shawn confronts his dad for the sake of the family operation; to disastrous results; Emily brings her father aboard The Eroica; Vernon loses a diver, he turns to an unlikely replacement; his daughter Elaine."

Fan-favorite Steve Pomrenke will be back. Or at least featured in the episode by the looks of it. Pomrenke joined the show in Season 1. According to IMDb, Pomrenke has been featured in 76 episodes since the show's inception and his last appearance was in 2018. With the senior Pomrenke back, only time will tell the reason behind his return. For now, fans have been hoping that Shawn's success streak continues as he inches closer to knocking Kerr off the top to take back his title of "Mr Gold".

'Bering Sea Gold' Season 9 airs Fridays 8 pm ET on Discovery.
