Tragedy struck Austin, Texas on April 8, 2022, after a deadly car crash resulted in 11 people being hospitalized, with two in critical condition. According to reports, two cars crashed into each other with such force that one careened into a nearby line of people at a food truck. Police are currently investigating the incident and confirmed that both drivers are cooperating, but cannot say for sure if they will be charged.

The incident comes amidst a surge in vehicular-related incidents, many of which have ended in tragedy. In late March, six teenage girls were killed in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, after their car collided with a semi-truck. Around the same time, Jayana Tanae Webb was arrested for running over two troopers in Pennsylvania while driving drunk. In late January, career criminal Gary Robinson jumped a red light causing a deadly crash that killed 9, including one baby in Las Vegas.

T-Bone crash leads to multiple injuries

The crash occurred along Barton Springs in South Austin, near Zilker Park. Eyewitnesses say a white pickup truck was traveling at high speed and hit a sedan that was turning. As a result, the sedan spun off the road and crashed into the Holla Mode food truck nearby. The pickup careened onto a sidewalk, crashing into a nearby bicycle rack. Captain Christa Steadman of the Austin Police Department told reporters, "one of the vehicles was pushed into the pedestrians near the food truck."

The sedan reportedly crashed into a line of people waiting near the food truck, causing 11 people to be injured. Seven have non-life-threatening injuries, but it is unclear at the moment if any of them is the driver. One eyewitness told local reporter Mike Marut that deaf and hard of hearing people didn’t hear the crash and were hit as a result. That claim is yet to be verified by the police. Marut also reported that people were "trapped under the silver car" as a result of the crash.

Another eyewitness told KUVE that the crash sounded like an "explosion". Diners at a restaurant just next to the scene rushed out, as did some employees to help the injured, before EMS personnel arrived. The manager of the restaurant claimed one of the victims had "a severe leg injury". The entire area has now been blocked off, as police continue to investigate. Thoughts and prayers are now pouring in for the victims on social media. We will update you when we know more about what happened.
