BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA: Austin Butler, the Golden Globe winner for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama award for his role as Elvis Presley in the 2022 biopic 'Elvis' by Baz Luhrmann has finally admitted he is trying to stop talking like Presley. “I am getting rid of the accent, but I have probably damaged my vocal cords with all that singing,” he said on Friday, February 3, during his talk on Britain’s 'The Graham Norton Show'.

The 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' actor who is nearing the end of his 'Elvis' press tour revealed that “One song took 40 takes!.” Butler was slammed online for still talking like the character he portrayed and was mocked over the past year for using a 'cringe Southern accent'. The actor who played the role of the late King of Rock and Roll is nominated for the 2023 Oscars.

Is Austin Butler using an 'Elvis' accent?

In response to the online reactions about his 'Elvis' accent, Butler explained to reporters at the time that he was not putting on an accent and was speaking in his normal accent. “I don’t think I sound like [Presley] still, but I guess I must because I hear it a lot," he said. “I had three years where that was my only focus. So, I’m sure there’s pieces of him in my DNA and I’ll always be linked,” Page Six reported.

Explaining the "twang," the 'Elvis' actor stated that as he spent all of his time preparing to portray the late singer, the twang could have influenced his speaking. Talking to Elle Australia in 2022, he said “You spend so much time obsessing about one thing, and it really is like muscular habits, your mouth can change. It’s pretty amazing. I know that I’m constantly changing. Check-in with me in 20 years when I’ve played a lot of roles. Who knows what I’ll sound like!”

'He realized he isn’t getting the Oscar'

As Butler revealed that he is finally getting rid of his accent, social media reacted to the statement by doubting whether the actor thinks he will not be receiving the Oscars. One social media user wrote, "Conveniently after he got his Oscar nomination," and another wrote, "Well doesn’t this just prove all his fans wrong who went to hell and back saying that was just his voice," while someone tweeted, "I thought he said he didn't have an accent."

"He realized he isn’t getting the Oscar," a user opined and another wrote, "The question is, will he go back to his original voice or will it be a new voice entirely?"

"Oscar is close so now it looks appropriate time to get his voice back lol," a user stated and someone remarked, "It's gonna be hilarious when he drops the accent mid ways through his acceptance speech if he wins an Oscar."

"I thought that it was always part of you and not going anywhere???," a user tweeted while another opined, "Every interview further proves how bad of an actor this guy is. Can’t turn a character on and off, had to train years for the role, 'permanently' changes his voice for a role, and has to do 40 takes of one scene. He’s gonna disappear so quickly after this delusional hype."
