'Eternal Sunshine' trends as Ateez bring back 'Illusion' storyline in the music video

The second half of ‘Fever Part 3’ is finally here. Ateez first came back with their eighth album, ‘ZERO: Fever Part 3’, in September. And it has been one of their most exciting comebacks to date. We first had the ‘K-pop Elections’ between ‘Deja Vu’ and ‘Eternal Susnhine’. And not only was it the first OT8 comeback of the year with Mingi finally joining his members, but the album also had 810,000 pre-orders. Additionally, they had several achievements, as they got music show wins against veteran artists and charted on seven Billboard charts.

But what fans loved was that Ateez brought back their title track voting tradition. Several artists have double title tracks for an album that they go on to promote on shows and interviews. But the eight-member K-pop group devised the most ingenious way to involve fans that even had non-fans curious about their comebacks. Ateez asks fans to vote between two potential title tracks and the one that wins becomes the first title track. And between ‘Deja Vu’ and ‘Eternal Sunshine’, ‘Deja Vu’ won.

Ateez releases 'Eternal Sunshine' music video

The most-voted title track is then first promoted with Ateez coming back a second time a month later to promote the second title track. In this case, ‘Deja Vu’ was given preference with the music video being released with the album and being performed on music shows. And on October 3, they dropped the music video for ‘Eternal Sunshine’ and are ready to promote it which means more content and performances for excited fans.

While ‘Deja Vu’ was dark and moody with the boys dancing to sultry choreography in leather outfits, ‘Eternal Sunshine’ is the complete opposite. The song makes several pop culture references as it calls back to the Jim Carrey movie, ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’, where the characters erase their memories. And every time they recreate a lost memory, they experience deja vu. Fans faced the same thing as they could find links to Ateez’s ‘Wave’/’Illusion’ era from the boys’ colorful outfits and hair to the music video of ‘Eternal Sunshine’.

Detective Atinys think that the boys are imagining themselves in a parallel world that is bright and cheerful and was introduced in the ‘Illusion’ music video. But in reality, they’re stuck in a desolate place as seen in the ‘Fireworks’ music video. The scenes from ‘Eternal Sunshine’ are their happy memories while in ‘Deja Vu’ they’re trying to remember while stuck in the decrepit and dystopic world. Other fans think that Yeosang tried to save the boys from the Masked Man in ‘Deja Vu’ and so broke the ‘cromer’ and brought them to the ‘Illusion’ world once more in ‘Eternal Sunshine’.

Fans have been trending #Eternal_Sunshine to hype up the music video. They made tweets like, “Jongho finally found mingi,” “THIS WOOSAN ENDING like peterpan took wendy to neverland.... so San is Peterpan and Wooyoung is Wendy (?),” and “Everyone stfu HE IS THE MOMENT.” One Atiny added, “The members’ reactions towards yeosang running to his seat.” Another shared, “Eternal sunshine yunho is so pretty.” One commented, “Eternal sunshine serving us these dreamy seonghwa looks.”
