Anne Shields: Expat grandmother, 67, mauled to death by stray pit bull she rescued in 2002
MACASTRE, SPAIN: Grandmother Anne Shields was attacked by the pitbull she had rescued, and died as a result of her "catastrophic" injuries. Shields, 67, was attacked by the dog she named Choccy, a starving stray that she had taken in while on holiday in Spain.
Choccy's brutal attack had injured Shields, causing wounds to her head and arm. When Choccy's neighbors in Macastre, Spain, a town close to Valencia, heard her screams and called the police, they decided to shoot Choccy so that medical personnel could reach Shields. The mother of one tragically died in the hospital the following day. Shields' daughter Sarah from Preston who spoke to The Sun stated that Shields never meant to keep the dog, but because the neighborhood animal shelters were filled, she decided to take care of him "until she found someone who could take him." Sarah described her mother, a British expat, as an animal lover who "couldn't bear the thought of throwing Choccy back on the streets."
