Why dogs love licking their owners’ faces
Many dog owners are apparently used to being awakened by a dog's kisses but they surely don’t know why they do that. According to PetMD, it's a common dog behavior, which they have inherited from wolves who used to lick the mouths of adults in the pack. The outlet also claimed that canines practice this habit to garner attention or to show their affection towards their human parents.
What do veterinarians say about this affectionate behavior?
Although this affectionate habit is absolutely loved by dog owners, many veterinarians advise owners to discourage face-licking in their dogs. Abdul Basit Javed, a small animal veterinarian, and writer, recently spoke about the possible negative effects of dogs licking their owners. "In general, it is not harmful when dogs lick their owners to show affection. However, it is best to discourage this behavior. The saliva from dogs can contain disease-causing germs which can lead to serious infections in humans, particularly those with compromised immunity," he told Newsweek.
He added, “Excessive licking can also cause skin irritation in owners. It is recommended to discourage licking behavior in dogs, especially if children and elderly people are present in the home due to their weaker immunity.”
