'American Idol' Top 20: Sage's 'pitchy' performance slammed as 'wailing mess'

'American Idol' fans not only critiqued Sage's performance but also slammed the judges for praising her 'pitchy performance'

Even though it may seem like 'American Idol' Season 20 kicked off just yesterday, the contestants are already battling it out for a spot on the coveted Top 14 list. After serenading the live audience at Disney's Aulani Resort in Hawaii, the top 24 contestants' fate lay in the hands of the audience as they would be deciding which of them would move on to the Top 20. With frontrunner Kenedi Anderson dropping out of the competition, things got more complicated for the audience.

Luckily, Sage managed to impress the audience enough to secure a spot on the top 20. After immediately learning that she had got through top 20, Sage was challenged with the task of wooing the audience yet again to earn a spot in the Top 14 list and continue her stint on the ABC's singing competition show. For her top 20 performance, Sage picked Fleetwood Mac's popular song 'Rhiannon'. While the judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan couldn't get enough of the 21-year-old performer's groovy voice and compared her to Janis Joplin, fans, however, were far from pleased with Sage's performance.

Several fans took to Twitter and the show's YouTube page to critique not only Sage's performance but also slam the judges for not being brutally honest about her 'pitchy performance'. A fan tweeted, "Sage was a wailing mess. Too long in the lower register and then wailed like she swallowed glass. #AmericanIdol." "Sage's not one of my faves. I think she thinks she's better than wht she is. #AmericanIdol," wrote a fan. "Sage rhiannon send her home... #americanidol," demanded a fan. "Sage is not the answer. #americanidol," added another fan.

Another fan shared, "Sage NO! Don't screw with Stevie Nicks. #americanidol." "She butchered that song.....Stevie Nicks shutters...will Nicolina make Stevie proud?" commented a fan on the show's YouTube clip of her performance. "A lot of pitch problems all over the place that weren't called out. This wasn't her best performance," expressed a fan. "The intro was awesome, but after that it was karaoke level. maybe i’m lacking taste idk but this doesn’t sound flawless in my ears," observed a fan. "These judges are so awful ..no real critiques #americanidol," slammed a fan.

'American Idol' Season 20 airs every Sunday and Monday at 8/7c on ABC.
