People tend to make a range of assumptions and judgments, all based on looks. As much as we might argue that looks don't matter, the harsh reality is that they do. To make it big in the movie and music industry, having the right look proves to be the first hurdle. And even though people have immense talent, it often gets overlooked because of this issue. But 'Alter Ego' is here to change that.

By allowing singers to perform through their unusual and unique avatars, it not only gives them a chance to create a persona that is uniquely them but also enables these singers to perform without any judgment. With Alanis Morissette, Nick Lachey, Grimes, and will.i.am as the judges of the show; their criteria is simple -- keep your Alter Ego as creative as you can and bring all the talent you have to the main stage.

For 30-year-old singer Mama Yaya from Chicago, the world of music is familiar, although it hasn't been as welcoming as she'd have liked it to be. As Mama Yaya explained, singing is a field that prioritizes looks, and if you don't look and act a certain way, it's impossible to make it big. She believes she does not fit in that mould but doesn't want to stop doing what she is passionate about. She thinks of herself, and her alter ego as a warrior and a fighter. Mama Yaya's alter ego, Siren is an underwater goddess who will lure you with her singing voice. She explained that she was on the show so that she could perform and not worry about what she looks like. Mama Yaya sang Nina Simone's 'I Put a Spell on You'. You can watch her performance here.

Her singing most certainly had the judges entranced, as they were charmed by her voice. Nick Lachey stated that he could sense that she has had a frustrating journey but was thankful for it, seeing that it ultimately brought her to the show. Even Alanis Morissette agreed that her voice was sensual and worthy to behold. Grimes later claimed that Siren was one of the best vocal performances that she had seen in her life. Having earned a standing ovation, Siren knocked off Fern from her spot on the Diamond and advancing to the next round!
