CUMBRIA, ENGLAND: Eleanor Williams, a 22-year-old woman who made up lies that she was raped by multiple men and trafficked by an Asian grooming gang, has been jailed for eight and a half years. Meanwhile, her mother, Alison Johnston, has spoken out about her feelings.

She said, “I’m heartbroken. I can’t [describe it]. I still can’t take it in, really. It just doesn’t feel real. I believe she was trying to get people to listen to her.” Williams even posted pictures of her injuries on social media, claiming those were from the attack by the men. However, they were just self-inflicted injuries. In January, she was found guilty of eight counts of doing acts tending and intending to pervert the course of justice.

What were the comments from Alison Johnston?

The mother also added, “I was just expecting a longer prison sentence for Ellie. I think the judge has been really fair in taking into account her age and her vulnerabilities.” She also explained her feelings while listening to the trials, “It was really hard to listen to; as a mother, it’s difficult to accept she’s responsible for all the things that he said. But in the eyes of the law, I’ve got to accept that. There’s an appeal going in, so we’ll have to wait and see what comes of that.” Meanwhile, William's sister, Lily, also spoke during the interview. She claimed that she believed Williams had been harmed by men on other occasions.

Lucy explained, "One of the men was harassing Ellie at the bar, and some of our friends had seen it, and they’d warned him off. And there was a takeaway around the corner from the nightclub, and Ellie was coming home that night with me. He grabbed her outside of the takeaway and started pulling her arm, saying: ‘Come on, we’re going.’ And she was like, No, I’m going with my sister, and his face, he was so angry with her. She did come home with me, and then the next weekend, she came back black and blue, worse than we’ve ever seen," as per The Independent.

What was the comment from the judge during sentencing?

His Honour Robert Altham, the honorary recorder of Preston, said during the sentencing, "It is troubling, to say the least that she shows no significant sign of remorse, even continuing to profess the truth of her allegations. The only flicker of appreciation of what she has done came today with a brief note read by her counsel regretting the effect of her post on May 20, 2020. There is no explanation for why the defendant would commit these offenses. She's gone to extraordinary lengths to create false accusations, including causing herself significant injury. No explanation for this behavior is apparent. However, that does not mean that I should speculate unless, and until the defendant chooses to say why she has told these lies, we will not know."
