From crossbow to hunting jacket: Alex Murdaugh's family estate items auctioned on eBay at inflated prices
WALTERBORO, SOUTH CAROLINA: Items from the Murdaugh family’s estate in South Carolina, including a crossbow and a wooden card catalog, were sold at an auction last week and have since been listed on eBay at inflated prices. Former attorney Alex Murdaugh was convicted earlier this month of killing his wife Maggie and son Paul at their 1,700-acre Moselle estate in 2021.
The sale of the items was part of the new owners’ plan to clear out the residence. A hunting jacket that was claimed to have belonged to Murdaugh was sold for $275 and a camouflage gun case was listed for an opening bid of $4,999. A pair of deer antlers from Moselle sold for $399.99 while a pair of men’s waders went for $125, FOX news reported.

The “alibi couch,” which has not surfaced for resale, a brown leather sectional set that Murdaugh claimed to have been resting on when his wife and son were killed, sold for $36,000 to Phillip Jennings III who owns a hunting lodge in Georgia. Jennings stated in an interview that the couch was "absolutely" comfortable and that he was not deterred by its grisly history. The derided tortoise shell lamps that went for $800 were also not put up for sale, as per reports.
Alex Murdaugh is currently serving his two concurrent life sentences at Kirkland Correctional Institution where he is being held in maximum security while he awaits trial for financial crimes. The sale of the Murdaugh family’s items was part of the new owners’ plan to clear out the residence, which was sold for $3.9 million earlier this month. Jurors visited the property just one day before convicting Murdaugh of murder.
'This is just our job. We clean up people's estates'
Approximately $530,000 of the sale proceeds went to Murdaugh’s surviving son, Buster, while the remainder will be used to pay legal fees and creditors, according to CNN. Despite the high-profile nature of the sale, Liberty Auction’s team insisted on treating it like any other estate sale with Lori Mattingly, one of the owners of the family-run business, stating that "this is just our job. We clean up people's estates. The Murdaughs' things are not any better or nicer than any other things that we pick up from other people's homes."
