Alec Baldwin has accused the family of Halyna Hutchins, the late cinematographer, of attempting to extort money from him. When he spoke at the Boulder International Film Festival about the terrible tragedy on the Rust set, the actor expressed his hope that "when the facts come out, we will not be held criminally responsible" for the shooting.

In October 2021, Hutchins, 42, was killed when a prop gun that Baldwin was practising with shot a live cartridge into her chest, killing her. Director Joel Souza, 48, was also injured but survived the shooting accident on the New Mexico set.

Alec Baldwin's daughter Ireland sends 'love and support' to Halyna Hutchins' family

"From the beginning, from the moment this happened, everybody has put out – besides all the anguish and the suffering, horrible feelings we have and, of course, there are two victims and nobody else is a victim, so to speak – we have dealt with a situation where specific people are not as interested in finding out what really happened," said Baldwin. He continued, saying: "What you have is a certain group of litigants on whatever side, who their attitude is, well, the people who likely seem negligent have enough money. And the people who have money are not negligent, but we’re not gonna let that stop us from doing what we need to do in terms of litigation."

"Why sue people if you're not going to get money?" he remarked. "That is what you are doing." Baldwin also reiterated his assertion that the deadly accident was caused by set armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, 24. "When someone whose job it is to ensure the safety of the weapon hands someone else whose job was to be the secondary layer of protection for safety and they hand it over to and you declare that that weapon is safe – that’s how I’ve lived my whole life," Baldwin explained. "I’ve relied on the safety experts there to declare the gun is safe and hand me the gun. Never had a problem."

Actors are "not allowed" to declare a weapon safe on set, he added. "I mean, the joke is, you don’t want the actors doing the safety check. They can’t even make coffee, they’re so stupid," he remarked. People reacted to Baldwin's comments in light of what is known about the incident and Baldwin's actions. A few of them have chosen Twitter to express their views. One tweet read, "Will Alec Baldwin sue the gun manufacturer for producing the gun used in his neglect??? And why aren't car manufacturers sued every time a drunk driver or radical leftist mow down people w/ a car? Cars are deadly weapons too, you know. So are planes&jets. SandyHook suit? A farce."

Another individual said that he should reflect on what had happened rather than defending or setting down facts. Her tweet read, "Listen, Alec Baldwin. You shot someone, on your movie set. A young woman with a husband and a child. She had expressed concerns about gun safety on the set. Be a man, take some responsibility for your behavior. Stop being such a f*cking narcissist."
