Social media can be a dark and vicious place at times. While content creators with massive followings can garner millions on views, the power of fan bases is also a force to be reckoned with, for better or worse. This time, it seems like TikTok star Addison Rae is on the receiving end of a cruel joke by K-pop stans. In an odd turn of events, the hashtag #RIPAddisonRae started trending, with many claiming that she's no more.

The bizarre trend started with a few K-pop stan accounts alleging that the star had 'died' and almost made it seem real, complete with tribute tweets and even alleged that news sources had confirmed the same. Shortly after, some accounts tweeted about how she didn't get a chance to collaborate with Loona, a K-pop girl group, and even referred to her latest Jimmy Fallon appearance, where she performed famous TikTok dances.

"She was so young i’m honestly so shocked #RIPAddisonRae" added another, fueling the fire. "Bring yellow roses to her funeral guys in memorial of addison rae #RIPAddisonRae #YellowRosesForRae" the account continued to tweet.

"She never got to collab with loona  #RIPAddisonRae" they added. "TMZ JUST CONFIRMED HER DEATH... IM SO IN SHOCK.. #RIPAddisonRae" followed another tweet in an attempt to add credibility. It didn't take too long for the hashtag to begin trending, with others jumping on the bandwagon. "#RIPAddisonRae she would've loved jaehee and jaeyoon" tweeted a fan.

"#RIPAddisonRae TREASURE is made of the members from the survival show YG Treasure Box. The group consists of Hyunsuk, Jihoon, Yoshi, Junkyu, Mashiho, Jaehyuk, Asahi, Yedam, Doyoung, Haruto, Jeongwoo, and Junghwan. The group debuted on August 7th, 2020." added another.

"#RIPAddisonRae such a shame she never listened to dreamcatcher.... she would have loved to listen to dreamcatcher" tweeted a user. "aw how sad she would’ve loved violeta sakura #RIPAddisonRae" added another. The hashtag was used primarily to promote K-pop idols, music and fan cams.

Some took to Twitter to call out those jumping on the trend, seeing that it was not only misinformation, but also extremely insensitive. "#RIPAddisonRae is trending but @whoisaddison is okay. No matter how you feel about her joking about her supposedly dying isn't at all funny. I know she's not everyones cup of tea but it's not funny to people who care for her. Trending this isn't cool. Act like adults. Honestly." Tweeted a user.

"The amount of kpop stans who are posting in the #RIPAddisonRae hashtag "AdDiSoN RaE WoUlD StIlL bE WiTh Us iF ShE sTAnnED BlACkPinK" need to touch some grass. this is a human being your pretending is dead, and for what? so that can make fun of her for doing certain dances? hush." agreed another
