PARIS, FRANCE: Balenciaga is once again in the limelight! The controversial luxury brand is trending on the internet for marketing an unusual handbag with a built-in glove. The Glove Large Tote Bag, designed to be slung over the shoulder but requiring the wearer's arm to pass through the handle and into a full-length glove, didn't seem very practical for many individuals online. Well, the bag costs $4,290.

This isn't the first unusual fashion item Balenciaga has received flak over. The French luxury fashion house has come under fire for its outrageously expensive products, including a $1,790 trash bag-like bag, $1,850 completely damaged sneakers, and over $5,000 'dirty' ensembles with holes in them. In one case, Balenciaga ultimately had to take down the campaign's advertisements as a hashtag encouraging a boycott of the clothing brand that even gained popularity in November 2022.

The glove bag, which retails for $4,290 and is available in black or bright pink, is a part of Balenciaga's Spring/Summer 2023 collection. The glove bag features two interior pockets and is constructed from "smooth calfskin" with a "lambskin lining."

'Harder to pickpocket'

Given that the glove is built-in, the tote can only be carried on the right shoulder, which isn't exactly convenient for left-handed trendsetters or even right-handed with aching arms. Many have reacted to the unusual fashion item on Twitter with one person writing, "Aren't women's shoulders and torsos and their proportions different? How is this real?" Another person sarcastically wrote, "Harder to pickpocket." This other person who shared a gif of upcoming Balenciaga items wrote, "These are next." A user asked, "Who came up with those hideous designs?" While another Twitter user wrote, "Who buys there s**t anymore"

A look into 5 past absurd products by Balenciaga

1) 'Dirty' clothes with holes for $5K

The brand has established a reputation for taking high fashion risks with extreme trends, as evidenced by prior collections. Balenciaga had previously sold 'dirty' clothes with holes costing more than $5000. It was a piece of the fashion house's summer 2023 collection, and as soon as people saw it, it started to circulate on the internet as memes.

2) One expensive Lay's

Balenciaga made waves when it unveiled a weird $1,800 handbag that was fashioned like an old bag of Lay's potato chips. People questioned the necessity to spend that much money on clothing that looked cheap.

3) World's most expensive garbage bag?

Similar to Lay's handbag, Balenciaga introduced the "world's most expensive garbage bag" for the Autumn/Winter 2022 collection. The garbage bag-shaped drawstring calfskin purse cost a staggering $1,790, which at the time caused a huge uproar on the internet.

4) Troll or new fashion trend?

A new fashion gimmick was introduced to the world of sneakers when Balenciaga debuted a new 'full destroyed' variation of their 'Paris' high-top sneaker, complete with shredding, smearing, and a graffiti logo. The fashion brand, under the direction of Demna Gvasalia, took things a step further by creating a limited-edition 'Fully Destroyed' variation of the shoe.

5) Infamous 'BDSM-inspired' outfit

Balenciaga received massive criticism for one campaign, which portrayed young children holding stuffed animals and donning BDSM accessories. It featured two important pieces of creativity, one of the adverts featured a young child holding a leather strap attached to a white toy while sporting a branded t-shirt.

The other advert portrayed a girl wearing a blue suit and holding a purple stuffed animal. After taking notice of the harsh criticism, the corporation swiftly apologized and withdrew the advertising campaign. "We strongly condemn child abuse; it was never our intent to include it in the narrative," Balenciaga wrote in the statement.
