More than half of the people in Canada are still opposing footing Harry and Meghan Markle's expensive security bill while they stay in their country as the couple is no longer representing the British monarch after stepping down from the royal family as senior members last month.

According to the statistics by Nanos Research for CTV, as reported by the Daily Mail, only 19 percent of Canadians had no objections to their country assuming a share of the security costs, while 77 percent of the people were unhappy at the thought of a huge chunk of their taxes going towards keeping Harry and Meghan Markle safe, especially after they no longer represent the British crown.

Meanwhile, there has been no official announcement regarding who will take the responsibility of paying the couple's security bills which goes to millions of dollars, as Canadian authorities are still trying to figure out the best course of action after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in January.

Since Queen Elizabeth II is the reigning head of state in Canada as it is a parliamentary monarchy, Harry and Meghan's security is estimated to cost taxpayers in Canada and the UK between $2.3 million and $7.8 million, annually.

However, while Canada is not constitutionally changing anytime soon, a large number of Canadians are of the opinion that it was high time the country distanced itself from the British monarchy. The same survey showed that only 32 percent were strongly in favor of maintaining links with the royal family while 35 percent would be more or less inclined towards abolishing links with the royals.

The one thing that a majority of them agreed, however, was the privacy of the couple, along with eight-month-old Archie, will be better respected in Canada than back in Harry's homeland.

However, Harry and Meghan are taking no risks as they have already issued a legal warning to the Canadian media over photographs of the mother-of-one hiking with Archie and two dogs, which they claimed were taken without their knowledge.
