RADOM, POLAND: Amidst the tragic consequences of World War II, the survival account of the Kurc family in the Hulu drama series 'We Were the Lucky Ones' stands as an inspiring symbol of optimism amidst the horrors.

Developed by Erica Lipez, the series is based on Georgia Hunter's book of the same name, which is the real story of Hunter's own family, who were split up at the beginning of the war in the hopes of surviving the horrifying event.

In the series' last episode, the Kurc family is seen attempting to get back together as the battle eventually comes to a close.

Halina Kurc (Joey King) is eventually reunited with her parents, Sol Kurc and Nechuma Kurc, after enduring the horrors of vicious German captivity.

Following news of the German defeat in the war, Halina offers to get the family back together.

Halina along with her parents goes to Radom to find out whether Addy Kurc (Logan Lerman) and Genek Kurc (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) had sent any letters to them but is rejected by the family, who now inhabit their apartment.

Once they realize the city is no longer theirs, Sol recommends moving somewhere else.

A few days later, Halina receives a letter from Genek, stating that he, his wife, Herta Seifert, and Selim, are in Italy.

Delighted to hear the news, the family plans to get back together. Halina advises walking instead of driving to bypass the checkpoints.

But she is shocked to learn that Jakob Kurc (Amit Rahav) and Bella (Eva Feiler) intend to go to America and to do so they must first go to Germany. After being reluctant at first, Halina gives in to ensure the happiness of the pair.

Following kilometers of traveling, the family eventually got together for an emotional reunion. It was then that Selim finally got to meet Felicia after a long absence and gave her a wonderful present: a special coin.

Addy is now expecting a child with Caroline, his spouse and makes the decision to go to America in order to start again.

The following day during a restaurant encounter with Elisabeth, Addy is confronted by an embassy employee, who inquires about Addy Kurc's whereabouts.

Astonished to learn that he has a telegram from the embassy, Addy rushes there without giving it any thought.

He is surprised to see that the telegram is from Genek, informing him that the family is safe in Italy. Addy, ecstatic, embraces the embassy official and begins to cry.

Jakob, on the other hand, before boarding the train with Bella, snaps a photo of the train with passengers to symbolize their fresh start in life.

Finally, the day of Addy's family meeting comes in June 1946. Coincidentally, that same day, Caroline gave birth to a girl named Kathleen. Addy hurries to the port and becomes impatient upon seeing the approaching ship.

Unable to wait any longer, the guy approaches the ship by rowing a smaller boat. After a while, he pauses and becomes ecstatic to hear his family yelling his name.

This gives him hope that they are safe and sound and that he will be reunited with them soon.

The scene shifts back to 1947, where the Kurcs commemorate the Passover holiday by lighting candles in remembrance of the dead.

The series' last few minutes revealed that the family is back together and contentedly speaking with Jakob and Bella, who are now parents to a son, in America.
