'The Walking Dead' closes its epic, record-setting run on AMC on Sunday. The show’s extended universe will live on, but the flagship series which is one of the biggest in cable history sadly wrapped up at 10.30 pm ET on Sunday. Regardless, risen from the ashes of 'The Walking Dead' is the upcoming spin-off 'The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon'. AMC released the first look at Norman Reedus reprising his role in the upcoming spin-off, although the photos came after 'The Walking Dead' came to a conclusion after 11 seasons on Sunday night.

In the new images, Reedus, 53, can be seen preparing for more epic adventures as he stands beside a horse and carriage and faces a pack of terrifying walkers. Reedus revealed a bit more about the new show and its "different tone" during the live episode of Talking Dead, which followed 'The Walking Dead's emotional final episode on Sunday. "It's very tunnel vision," the actor said. "There's a focus in it that I'm really enjoying." "We're in castles and there are moats and everyone's speaking French," Reedus continued. "(Daryl's) trying to figure out what they're saying, and is this going to be a fight?"

What day and time will 'The Walking Dead' Season 11 Episode 22 premiere on AMC?

However, 'The Walking Dead' was a rating phenomenon that few cable series have ever equaled, and as the show bows out, it’s worth looking back. When 'The Walking Dead' premiered on October 31, 2010, AMC had established itself as a destination for buzzed-about original series. For all the critical awards acclaim its predecessors 'Mad Men' and 'Breaking Bad' had racked up in the three previous years, however, they were still pretty small shows in audience terms. 'The Walking Dead' premiered to 5.35 million viewers, making it by far the biggest series debut AMC had seen to that point and one of the largest in cable history. The six-episode first season was fairly steady throughout its run, averaging 5.24 million viewers on the night it first aired. Ever since the series only kept getting bigger before it concluded last Sunday.

Speaking of the spin-off, in September, the actor teased how the new series is "going to be f***ing epic" in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Reedus added that fans can expect the show to feel different from the original series. "We knew we wanted to make a show that went in the opposite direction just because we didn't want to do the same thing," he explained. "So that's what we're doing. And it's going to be way different." "The story's way different," the actor continued. "The characters are way different. There's a different tone. There's different light. There's a different sound." "It's a whole different vibe," he finished.

'The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon' is set to premiere in 2023.
