Don't let the limited cast members of 'Malcolm & Marie' fool you. While critics have noted that the gigantic house which serves as the setting for the entire over two-hour black and white movie's third character, one could also say that Marie's metallic dress that she wears to Malcolm's premiere has just as much of a role to play.
Clinging to Zendaya's physique as she stomps and lashes, huffs and puffs in her snubbed frustration, the metallic dress leaves little to the imagination and is beyond sexy. And now bless Zendaya for giving us a look at what the real color of the gown is in a brand new behind-the-scene selfie from the newly released Netflix film.

Zendaya's 'Malcolm & Marie' dress
'Malcolm & Marie' might have come out almost a week ago, but the buzz surrounding the Sam Levinson film shot during the pandemic still continues. Zendaya stars opposite John David Washington, who plays the titular Malcolm, a filmmaker whose movie just had a grand premiere.
His girlfriend Marie is jilted because he forgot to thank her in his big speech of the night, and one would understand her because the plot is based on a girl struggling to get clean at 20 — the way Marie was when Malcolm had met her. Soon buried emotions storm their way out like vipers to lead to a massive fight where neither of them holds back the damaging words. And in all of this, the first part of the film shines mostly through the dress.
The mastermind who made it
To make a film stand out with just two cast members, a permanent indoor setting and amid the pandemic, the technicalities have to be on point, perhaps why Levinson didn't risk it when it came to Marie's outfits of the night. She changes through the fight, from the metallic cross-over bodice with a split skirt, to black mesh pantyhose as she prepares to take a bath, white tank top and briefs after the bath, and a loose Kimono as the fight nears its mellow point.
It is however the custom made grown by Law Roach that has won our hearts, and for everyone wondering what the color of the gown is, Zendaya has finally answered.
The actual color of the metallic gown
In her new Instagram photo, the 24-year-old can be seen crouching over in front of a full-length mirror, wearing the same much-talked-about dress and black stilettos, as she takes the selfie. The metallic gown, as it turns out, is in pewter.
Zendaya shared the photo in a series of self-shots taken from what looks like the filming process of 'Malcolm & Marie' as Washington can be seen in some of his signature attire from the film too. The actress shares them as part of her Instagram stories on February 10, meaning you might have just 20 more hours or so to witness THAT dress in all its glory.
Fans were sure it was gold
But the actress also posted the same shots on Twitter so that's something more permanent. However, there was some disappointment some fans felt upon discovering what they had imagined the color to be in black and white, isn't actually the shade of the fabric. A fan responded: "i swore that dress was gold, I feel lied to" and another wrote, "The dress was gold in my mind so it’s staying gold."
They weren't the only ones since gold seemed to be the most popular choice that fans had assumed about the dress. "Wow plot twist I really thought the dress was bronze" shared another. Others dropped reactions through gifs saying "Not me thinking the dress was red in color".
Some were even "dead set on it being purple and i have literally no idea why? i thought i’d somehow seen it already but apparently i made it up." And there was a sizeable chunk in favor of "emerald green" too. What color did you think the dress was?
