Spoilers ahead for 'You' season 4 episode 9.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Netflix's 'You' has once again surprised us with several characters from previous seasons making a comeback. Gemma, BeckLove and Marienne, who were Joe's lovers and then victims, returned leaving people with a burning question.

Directed by Penn Badgley, Season 4 Episode 9 is titled 'She's Not There'. As several people from Joe's past reappear, a major question that arises is the strange connection between him and Kate. Though she gives us a powerful performance on her own, the chemistry between Kate and Joe is unlike the others and exudes an odd vibe.

The return of Beck and Love

The dream sequence of Joe with both Beck and Love became an integral part of the season and one of the highlights too. The sequence starts when Joe is going through a confused run, with demons on his head taking the shape of his victims. In this unusual trip down memory lane, he is first confronted by his latest victim from this season, Gemma. After he passes through her, he then meets his Season 1 sweetheart, Beck. Though she appears for a fraction of a second, the charm and the screen presence she carries add depth to the scene. When Joe sees her, he starts to crumble and each word from Beck's mouth is a direct stab at Joe. When Beck asks, "Oh, I’m sorry. Did I hurt your feelings?" it brought back the dynamic both characters shared in Season 1 and showed us how she could easily get into his mind.

It does not end there. Joe meets another lover and victim of his, Love, another memorable character. She confronts him and breaks him. This is the first time that the audience can see Joe confused and vulnerable. While he is desperately trying to get the metaphorical key to free Marienne, this confrontation makes him stumble. When Love says the chilling, "Hi, Joe," it brings back all the memories, and instead of helping him, she hands him a gun, saying, "Somebody does need to die for this to end," and then puts the gun to his head, causing him to wake up.

The lack of connection between Joe and Kate

One of the reasons the dream sequence works flawlessly is due to the emotional connections Joe shares with Beck and Love. Though we have not seen those characters after their deaths, their presence gives us a glimpse of the history they shared. This "key factor" seems to be missing in Joe's relationship with Kate. This has majorly to do with the fact that Kate was with Malcolm before the latter was murdered. As compared to Joe's earlier love interests, Kate seems a bit disconnected and there seems to be some kind of tension between the couple. However, this leads her to open up a new avenue for Joe as the couple now lives in New York City. It will be interesting to see how Joe handles his next chapter with Kate. If there is a fifth season of the show, it would shed more light on this new relationship dynamic, with Joe as a more vulnerable person as opposed to always being in control.
