CINCINNATI, OHIO: A third-year-old boy is reportedly making recovery after nearly losing his arm in a brutal dog attack at his Cincinnati home, according to his family. Xavier Carr was attacked on March 2, when his family was dog-sitting another person's Belgian Malinois.

Xavier’s father Joshua Carr said he rushed to his son's aid after he heard him "screaming at the top of his lungs." The frantic father immediately unbuckled his belt and tried to staunch the blood by wrapping it over Xavier's arm. "There was a huge puddle of blood underneath him," Carr recalled to WKRC-TV. "As cliché as it sounds, I immediately thought of Grey's Anatomy, and I took my belt off that I was wearing and wrapped it around his arm to stop the bleeding as I was calling 911."

Eight dogs that viciously mauled a 28-year-old dog walker to death will remain 'in kennels for a year'

'High chance' of regaining arm's use

Doctors believe Joshua's prompt actions to stop the bleeding saved young Xavier’s life. The toddler has since undergone many surgeries in an effort to reattach his arm, which was apparently only attached to the rest of his body by two inches of muscle and skin. According to reports, doctors are still hopeful that he may regain the use of his arm following the surgery. "It's going to be limited, but he's got a high chance of being able to use that [arm] again, partially because he was [attacked] at such a young age," Carr said. The dog was reportedly euthanized following the savage attack.

Fundraiser set up

A fundraiser has been set up to raise money for his medical expenses. "He has already gone under many surgeries with many more to come. Including the reconstruction of the arm taking the skin, nerves, and muscles from other parts of his body to reconstruct the arm back together,” the fundraiser’s description reads. "The goal of raising funds is to provide Xavier with all the help that he can get with medical bills for the rest of his life, therapy, physical therapies, and much much more.”

The horrific incident came just days after a newborn baby girl was viciously mauled to death by her family’s two Rottweiler dogs. The five-week-old was bitten by the two dogs in the family's home in Moruya, in NSW's far south coast, at around 10.40 pm on Saturday, February 18. The baby girl was soon rushed to Moruya hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The Eurobodalla Shire Council has since seized two Rottweiler dogs from the home. There has been an investigation launched by the NSW Police into exactly what happened at the house, and a police spokesman said he was unable to provide any further comment.
