Episode two of ‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’ Season 2 dropped on Wednesday, September 8. Bobby Diggs (Ashton Sanders), after getting free from his trial of an attempted murder, returns home victorious as his family gathers around for a little celebration at their house.

The show cleverly leaves breadcrumbs on the second episode titled ‘Brooklyn Zoo’ as Bobby Diggs is shown watching a kung-fu movie with his family members and for the unversed, the name Wu-Tang is derived from the same form of martial art. In fact, the group’s first album ‘Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’ drops a lot of references from kung-fu including the title. Just like the first season, season two will also follow the lives of the group as they deal with their personal tragedies.

Plot

We are glad that in the second episode, the focus shifts a bit from Bobby Digs as Julian Elijah Martinez who plays Divine, and TJ Atoms who plays the role of Ason shine bright in the nearly 50-minute episode. While Diggs is trying to forget his brush with the crime, Ason and Divine too deal with their respective problems. We see Ason getting beaten up by a rival group in the broad daylight. We also see Divine hunting for a ’36 Chambers’ movie as the makers drop another hint showing the actor’s love for the martial art.

On the other hand, Diggs and his pal Dennis plan their next move as the latter focuses on building a strong foundation. The episode also features a few light-hearted moments especially when Diggs’ mother comes in the basement and dances while convincing him for a better life. The moment is enough for the two to show how they both have been through so much together.  We also see Dave East, who plays Shotgun aka Method Man on the show making his first appearance on season two along with a few other supporting cast members.

Script

Without following a particular incident like the first episode, the second one flows free as it also focuses on other characters living their everyday life. However, the makers follow the same route as the first episode — they keep things slow and steady in the beginning but make the episode gritter as it approaches half-time. We finally get to see Diggs fiddling with his piano and music records in the basement trying to erase his criminal past. Power (Marcus Callender), is seen in the studio as he cracks a deal for a studio session with one of the producers.

A scene also shows plays U-God (Damani Sease) spending his time in jail. The script also has its funny moments. Ason is showing off his rapping skills to his close pal when the rival group again attacks him from the back. He then surprisingly pulls off a kung-fu move while snatching the gun as they make a run for their life. The makers again here cleverly dropped the hints of the martial art along with a peppy background score.

Acting

Continuing the ritual, the second episode, ‘Brooklyn Zoo’ packs a heavy punch on emotions but also keeps it light in few places. Other characters from the Wu-Tang Clan definitely excel in their skills in front of the camera. The episode shows the members now starting to chase their dreams which will surely keep the audience hooked to their couches.
